This article is part of “Unaffordable America,” a series examining rising economic inequality in the U.S. and the policies that drive it.
PHOENIX — The line outside a suburban office building was already 15 people long when Tiffany Hudson showed up with her 7-year-old son cradling his blanket. It was 7 a.m. At the front of the line was a woman hooked up to an oxygen tank who had arrived 90 minutes before the building opened.
Like others there, Husdon had come to the Arizona Department of Economic Security office in Surprise, a Phoenix suburb, to find out why the food stamp benefits for her and her two children were cut off after the state began implementing new eligibility requirements under President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.”

Oh the horror!
We have a local food bank in Phoenix z
Its called “a job”…
As in “ Find one”… and “work”.
No more junk food. Gee, cry me a river.
Cave Creek also has one.
If there was ever an indication that the Media is simply the mouthpiece of the Democrat Party, it is this.
Does anyone recall any articles like this between 2021 and 2024? Didn't think so.
I hope every single entity along these lines in the Media declares Chapter 11.
Oh good grief.
Some of those food stamp recipients I’ve seen could stand to miss a few meals.
“Tiffany Hudson showed up with her 7-year-old son cradling his blanket.”
I’d be interested to hear what MR. Hudson has to say about the subject. /s/
Where is the father of Tiffany’s two children?
Why isn’t he forced to support his kids?
I am so tired of these boo-hoo stories. I’m on a fixed income and I haven’t tasted a steak in months, but in line in front of me is a woman buying T-bone steak, twinkies, two cartons of soft drinks, frozen pizzas, in-store fried chicken, two six packs, two bottles of wine, and a bottle of vodka and paying for it with an EBT card. I don’t know the rules, but I would think alcohol purchases are illegal with EBT cards, but she had no problem at the cash register. To the lady in this story, here’s an idea: If you can afford to feed kids, don’t have ‘em in the first place.
If people are hungry, in this country, and are unable to provide food for themselves or their families, I say feed them.
The government of the United States of America takes in enough money to feed, clothe and house every American citizen!
But, the government chooses to gift boat-loads of “our” money to foreign countries so that they can war against one another!
That’s just Bullshit!
Nothing, Zero for Illegals.
Not one penny.
Not one band aid.
Not one crumb.
Handcuffs and GTFO
Then there will be plenty for our fellow US Citizens that may need a temporary helping hand up.
I know a few people on SNAP, and after I asked they told me they were all notified and knew, many months in advance, that new requirements were coming into effect. 2 of them were already working enough, one enrolled in a trade school, and one (an 63 year old lady) started a volunteer job at a non-profit assisting veterans. All of these scenarios kept them eligible.
Who is on LINE here just for INFORMATION? Can they not read? Are they just low IQ?
If someone is supposed to be on food stamps and isn’t then it is a glitch on their part, and/or with the state social worker, either way it is a normal paperwork glitch that they need to take care of and doesn’t have a place in what should be widespread reporting about victories against mass food stamp fraud and cleaning up the program.
Reporting the news should mean reporting on the people’s victories against fraudsters and criminals exploiting our help systems.
I bet you if they showed pictures of them, they are obese
Come on, you hard hearted conservatives. Gasoline prices are up, and it costs a lot to keep those Bentleys, Ferraris and Porsches running. They need those food stamps more than ever these days.
unfortunately the facts are against you since the single most defining characteristic of Americas poor is ... obesity.
I was living in Portland, OR in 2011 and saw huge food lines downtown.
I suggested to the local GOP they show them to voters.
They never did.
