The two possible causes for the cruise ship hantavirus outbreak — one is disgusting, the other terrifying
New York Post ^ | May 5, 2026 | Georgia Worrell

The suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has killed three people and sickened at least seven others, has two likely causes — and both are bad news for the 150 passengers on board, experts said.

The more likely scenario would be passengers contracting the virus from the feces, urine or saliva of infected rats or mice.

That’s the usual transmission vector, according to physician Zaid Fadul, a former Air Force flight surgeon — although the World Health Organization insisted Tuesday that no rodents have been found on the stranded liner.

But there’s one strain of the hantavirus that has an alarming exception — and the one that the WHO conceded “can’t be ruled out.”

“The Andes virus — that one specific subtype of the hantavirus — in Argentina, where they were, is the one that’s transmitted person-to-person,” Fadul said.

....staying away from people” and wearing a mask while around others could significantly reduce risk.

Where have I heard that before?

Pretty scary stuff if the strain of Hanta virus is the one with the 40% mortality rate.

I’d really really hate to be stuck on a boat. I’m sure everyone is isolating from one another too.

Yes it is a ridiculously small cruise ship. You will not ever catch me on a small ship, I get sea sick easily. My preferred ships are Oasis class ships, carrying 6000 passengers. So stable, I cannot tell if ship is moving in the cabin. And bigger ships have better entertainment shows. They can afford to hire expensive entertainment shows. Small ships cannot. The shows I saw on Oasis of the Seas ship run by Royal Caribbean cruise line were the best I have ever seen. That ship also has a huge ice-skating rink and the ice shows are fantastic. The ship is so large, walk from my cabin to dining place and back to cabin recorded half a mile on my pedometer. No wonder I always come back feeling stronger from cruises, with all that walking.

I was thinking maybe they had a “gay” cruise even on the ship prior to this one.

Since all ports are refusing it, will they rename it The Flying Dutchman?

We have strains of Hanta virus in the U.S.

There are things all over the world - and not just the ‘third’ - that can kill you.

I guess one question is if the rats were on board when the latest cruise began, or were they picked up at some stop during the cruise.

Hantavirus is much more serious than COVID ever could be.

Though the mask only majorly applies to this Andes version, with personal contact vector. But one still might want to mask in case any mouse crap is around….

All hantavirus is deadly serious.

The Andes just makes it scarier from just breathing on each other.

Actually, you will find more speciemans in the ChiCom labs than in Argentina.
