OTTAWA — The video playing was clearly Pete Hoekstra, the frequently combative U.S. ambassador to Canada. But something was off. He kept referring to Canada as a partner?
“For all of the critical things that we need, Canada would be an ideal partner,” Hoekstra said in a prerecorded conversation at a conservative think tank in March.
Hoekstra ticked off the ways the two countries could work together: deepened military cooperation in the Arctic, including through Trump’s “Golden Dome”; beefed-up energy cooperation on oil and gas, critical minerals and uranium; coordinating on artificial intelligence. At one point, he even cited the George W. Bush-era rhetoric of building a “fortress North America.”
It was a detour from the acerbic, angry and highly undiplomatic tone that Canadians had grown accustomed to from President Donald Trump’s man in Ottawa. The same man who wrote to The Globe and Mail demanding an apology for a column criticizing U.S. Olympic hockey players. The same man who reamed out a Canadian trade official with an expletive-laden tirade at a high-profile gala. Yet here was Hoekstra, seemingly offering a helpful roadmap for exactly how Canada can partner with — and essentially survive — the United States under Trump.
Now one year into his job in the top diplomatic post, Hoekstra’s relationship with his Canadian hosts remains chilly. But it also seems as if both sides have at least begun to understand each other a bit more, with a pragmatic acceptance of their new realities.
“Pay attention to Pete Hoekstra,” said a Canadian official familiar with Canada-U.S. trade negotiations. “I know he’s easy to hate and vilify, but some of the shit he says is channeling what the administration wants.” This official, like several others in this story, was granted anonymity to speak candidly about a delicate relationship.

Sounds like a deal they shouldn't refuse.
After Chrytsia Freeland and Trudeau the Canadians are tone deaf indeed to complain about the demeanor of Trump & our ambassador.
Canada should wise up to the difference between a narrative and the truth. They have endured much hardship because they bought into arrogant, incompetent and liberal agenda driven politicians who gulled Canadian with rhetoric about Canada’s “place” in the world while destroying her economy and the economic opportunities in co-operation w/USA vs being tools of China.
Our friends to the north really need to stiffen their immigration law, otherwise - Canada becomes a literal filter for trickle down illegal immigration...
They also don’t have the abounding misinterpretation of a type of 14th amendment either.
The elbows up zombies are starting to figure out the truth.
Could the media propaganda machine be turning?
Who’s your daddy Canada? The US or China? Because it’s clear you’re not capable of managing yourself.
The reality is that Canada really doesn’t matter any more.
Alberta and Saskatchewan are leaving the federation to become some entity independent from Canada. President Trump signed the pipeline deal and Alberta will allow it to go forward just disregarding the envirowackos in Ottawa
State hood is tossed around but either independent nationhood or territorial status are what’s most likely.
It’s hard to tell, but Manitoba and Yukon might be part of the deal as well.
Any way, come October it will all be very different

Just a load of crap.
The Carney Liberal socialists government is bent on maintaining a protected market for Carney’s liberal cronies, using federal environmental law, 1st nations treaties, and a fake news propaganda press ( CBC. CTV etc)
to hoodwink Canadians. Them the liberal commies write waivers to the environmental laws for their cronies who have no competition in a protected market,
and they become millionaires while the whole of Canada is held back economically, social mobility is frozen, housing and groceries become unaffordable, and the nation is ruled by defacto elitist commies.
Thats the state of Canada. The best thing the Trump administration could do is have Radio America broadcast these truths to ALL of Canada, and fund campaigns against the Socialist government tyrants in Ottawa. What Carney is creating in Canada is Zimbabwe North, a military vulnerability on the US Northern border, which will not be tolerated much longer.
As far as Ambassador Hofstra is concerned, IMHO he has been too lenient on the Carney, anti Christian, protectionist market, gun grabbing government. He should be hollering the truth as he has been, and laughing at the spin that the CBC has put on him as being a Trump troglodyte, every time he speaks to Canadians.
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba all have effective referendum campaigns on their exit from Canada, refusing to be held back in poverty any longer by the Ottawa Communist government of Canada.Theb fake news of Canada, is now attempting t9i criminalize these movements in order to justify future military intervention,, and that is when these exiting provinces will request President Trump for military intervention and protection .
I would gladly take all 4. Could we please give them New England in exchange?
Hoekstra was a solid Congressman from Michigan. Being from Michigan, he would be very knowledgeable about trade with Canada. He sounds like an exceptional pick.
I first saw him when he was making fun of a proposed turtle fence. Here is a link to the “auto-tune the news” version from long ago. Give it a few seconds to get going.

Alberta and Saskatchewan are leaving “
I don’t think so, the secession process is very difficult and was set up to stop any province from trying it. A vote to separate would be the first of many steps even if it does pass. If they do vote to leave it will give them leverage to get the leftist a-holes in Ottawa off their backs.
They could be great friends with the US by handing over Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the US in the near future.
bad cop, good cop ... right?
Anyone take the garbage that pollution-co makes up they see you as being their fool. How can a rag hate us and our country so much? Their hate for the duly elected president is sickening. Everybody already knew how Trump was. They are just peed off he doesn’t bow and kiss their butts. Pollution-co is nothing important in the big scheme of our lives. shun all the leftwing hate sites. They don’t care about you. They only care about themselves.
Or, they merely disregard Ottawa and just cease being Canada. Abandoning “the procedure” is precisely the reason for abandoning the procedure
Who is going to stop them?
They will essentially just start being American and not Canadian.
Or, they merely disregard Ottawa“
This type of independent thinking and action doesn’t seem to be part of Canadian’s DNA. After all they are a country made up of “loyalists”. I would love to be wrong.
