Supreme Court limits use of race in redistricting in a win for GOP

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday further weakened the Voting Rights Act, ruling that a congressional map in Louisiana was a racial gerrymander even though it was drawn to comply with the landmark law aimed at protecting minority voters.

The justices, split 6-3 with the court's conservatives in the majority, told states they can almost never consider race when drawing maps to comply with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which was enacted to protect minority voters who long faced discrimination in elections.

Conservative Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the majority, said that while there may be extreme situations where the use of race can be justified to draw a map, it was not in the Louisiana case. As a result, the new map was an "unconstitutional racial gerrymander," he added.

In a separate concurring opinion, conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, a longtime critic of the Voting Rights Act, said the ruling should "largely put an end" to a system that he saw as unlawfully dividing people into districts based on race.

The three liberal justices dissented, with Justice Elena Kagan writing that the "consequences are likely to be far-reaching and grave."

The ruling effectively "renders Section 2 all but a dead letter," she added.

The ruling sets new guidelines for how courts will analyze future cases in which states draw new maps, putting new limits on how much race can be considered.

Of COURSE you expect the Enemedia to spin this decision as disenfranchisement, but in reality, it returns representation to the unrepresented.

Virginia, watch yer a&&.

The decision in Louisiana v. Callais is widely expected to lead many states — especially Republican-controlled ones in the South — to pursue redistricting that reduces or eliminates race-based districting, though significant changes for the 2026 midterms are unlikely in most places due to timing.

No doubt written by three 20 somethings, no bias there.

Just look at a congressional map of Northern Illinois and a completely unbiased person from another COUNTRY can see that something is wildly wrong with it.

This makes the Virginia case a slam dunk, an unconstitutional law.

I have always found the justifications for gerrymandering logically weak. Blacks are supposedly the same as the rest of America... correct. So the logical inconsistency is that only Blacks can represent Blacks. So what you are saying is Blacks ARE different. Could you imagine if gerrymandering went the other way, the howls? Then again leftists never make any sense.

The crazy thing about this is all the liberal legislation that was passed because federal judges were rewriting district lines totally unconstitutionally.

They make perfect sense once we state the truth. Progressives are racist. They are the ones who view black people as different and inferior, incapable of achieving excellence without their help.

Relying on race ALONE is about as egregious as any racist creed or tenet put forth by the most virulent of defenders of “purity” in blood and culture regarding the broader society.

How a minority, on achieving majority status, despises all other minorities.
