Voter ID and proof of citizenship qualify for California ballot measure in November

A proposal that would require California to verify proof of citizenship when a person registers to vote — and require voters to provide identification at polling places — will appear on the November ballot, state officials announced Friday.

The announcement comes amid a national debate over election security and what type of requirements voters should face to show they are qualified to cast a ballot. In Congress, Republicans are pushing a strict proof-of-citizenship proposal for residents to vote, encouraged by President Donald Trump.

The California plan — also backed by Republicans — is being pitched as a common sense idea to strengthen confidence in voting in a vast state with more than 23 million people registered to cast a ballot. State officials said its backers submitted sufficient petition signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

“We already show ID for everyday activities like flying, opening a bank account and picking up prescription medications. Thirty-six other states and many countries around the world already use voter ID,” said state Sen. Tony Strickland, a Republican from Huntington Beach.

“Californians deserve secure, transparent elections,” added Strickland, a proponent of the proposal.

If approved in November in the heavily Democratic state, other provisions would require those who vote through popular mail-in ballots would have to give the last four digits of a government-issued ID, such as a Social Security number.

California is among 14 states and the District of Columbia that do not require voters to show some form of identification at the polls or to register to vote.

It’s about time! This is a commonsense idea. Surprised that California finally put on the ballot. You have to have ID to buy cigarettes and alcoholic beverages.

“research shows voter fraud in the country is rare.”

Only pretend research shows that.

This will be like when the California voters voted gay marriage down, overwhelmingly, and the legislature ignored it.

Georgia is on the brink of passing legislation for paper ballots in the fall general election. We already have voter ID.

The amazing thing is that this is on the November ballot. Amazing. It is another step forward.

So let's ignore voter fraud and let it go, is that right AP? Research shows murders are at about 6 per 100,000. Why devote resources to preventing and investigating them since murder is rare?

Yep. If the measure passes, the Democrats will look for some far-left judge to invalidate the vote. And they’ll find one.

This will gum up the process for months if not years.

Exactly right. Doesn’t matter what the voters of California want; only what the entrenched one-party state wants.

Only pretend research shows that.

Which is to say there is no "research" at all. I.e., it is in-your-face-BS!

The actual and actionable fraud on the entire nation is the government of CA "not requiring voters provide ID either at the polls or to register to vote".

There is a long standing and immediate fix for that which our elders of both parties seem to wish to overlook.

You think you may have a problem with illegal voting,
and so you propose a solution,
and then you put it up for a vote!

Here is what will happen. The Left will go into hysterical lies trying to defeat it. The fraud machine will be geared up to full power in an attempt to defeat it. It will pass anyways . An Obama judge will rule the law unconstitutional and no California politician will appeal it. A repeat of what happened with Proposition 187.

With the system they've cooked, it depends upon the means by which they cheat as to the relative magnitude they can get away with. If 80% of voters approve of the measure, they'll have a hard time covering for the "adjustments."

Right. You will not find something if you dare not look for it.

In a way, it’s like standing on an beach and declaring that are no fish in the ocean. Because you can’t see any.

The Associated Press found no evidence of widespread fraud that could have changed the results. Multiple reviews, audits and recounts in the battleground states where Trump disputed his loss confirmed Democrat Joe Biden’s victory, including several overseen by Republican lawmakers.

Let's examine a few things re voting in the once-golden-state, shall we?

1. One must be a US citizen and a resident of Cali to vote in Cali. The law.

2. (from AI) the ability to speak, read, and write basic English is a requirement for U.S. citizenship

3. However, ballots in several different languages? Correct.

4. Drivers' Licenses to non-citizens? Yup. Can drivers licenses be used to register to vote in California? Yup. (someone should double check this for accuracy)

5. Commercials and billboards in spanish?

6. A California Assembly committee has advanced a bill that would ban law enforcement officers from being near polling places, with violations carrying penalties of up to $1,000 in fines and a maximum five-year prison sentence.

What am I missing? As it appears to me that it's a cinch for non-citizens to vote in California, and keeping law enforcement away from polling locations can only have one reason behind it.

Corrections invited, as this was just a quick look via AI.
