The "trophy-bearer" is also patron saint of the Republic of Georgia (naturally), England, Ethiopia, and other nations. The great-martyr is patron of Beirut, Lebanon and nearby St. George Bay. Orthodox Christian hospitals in Beirut and Hosn, Syria bear his name. St. George is patron of soldiers (of which he was one), scouts and peacekeepers.
Hundreds -- if not thousands -- of churches, chapels and monasteries bear his name around the world. Countless people bear his name, too.
St. George was born in Cappadocia the son of wealthy and virtuous parents. His father suffered for Christ and his mother then moved with her son to Palestine where she had farmland. When George grew up, he entered the military, where in his twentieth year, he attained the rank of a Tribune and was in the service of Emperor Diocletian. The most famous of Georgeโs miracles are depicted in iconography. Near Mount Lebanon was a large lake, inhabited by an enormous dragon-like serpent. Coming out of the lake, it devoured people, and the breath from its nostrils poisoned the air. George rode up on his horse with spear in hand and signed himself with the Sign of the Cross. He rushed at the serpent saying, โIn the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.โ George pierced the throat of the serpent with his spear and trampled it with his horse. Twenty-five thousand men, not counting women and children, were then baptized. The Empress Alexandra believed in Christ through George. Diocletian wanted paganism to be the state religion to unify his empire. Since George and Alexandra refused to offer sacrifices to idols and renounce the one true Faith, Diocletian had them both beheaded in 303. Though he was a talented officer who amazed the world by his military exploits, George is known as the Victory-bearer, or Trophy-bearer, not only for his military achievements, but for successfully enduring martyrdom.
As the deliverer of captives and the protector of the poor, as the physician of the feeble and combatant of kings, holy champion and great martyr George, intercede with Christ our God to save our souls.
+ Apolytikion of St. George, Tone 4
Thou hast been tilled by God, becoming an honored and pious husbandman. The sheaves of virtue thou hast gathered unto thyself, O George; for having sowed with tears thou didst reap with joy; and didst struggle unto blood, attaining Christ. Wherefore, by thine intercessions, O Saint, thou dost grant to all remission of sins.
+ Kontakion of St. George, Tone 4
This is the first time I’ve heard the whole story of St. George. He was quite a hero. No wonder he was made a saint.

Greetings to all at the Canteen!
To all our military men and women, past and present,
THANK YOU
for your service!

Comments below the video:
“Judge Winston is my 9th great grandfather and I’m from Amelia, Virginia. We learned about Peter Francisco in 4th grade. As soon as I saw the title, I started shouting PETER FRANCISCO! PETER FRANCISCO! My husband thought I crazy. Thank you for doing this video and bringing light to a very cool man that most have never heard of.”
“Pedro Francisco was:
Abandoned by the crew of a ship, as a small child;
Taken in, to live and work in a farm;
Grew up there, crafting and making stuff;
Got the attention of old, wise mentours, generals of the former dominating power, turned rebels;
Receives a sword, proceeds to kick some hell lotta ass with it,
Proceeds to help the rebels win against an Empire...
Shit, dude. This guy is not only a war hero. The guy is OG fkng Luke Skywalker.”

Howdy, luvie.
It was a good day but a long one. Windy again but not quite as bad as yesterday. Tomorrow looks like it might be decent but Friday’s gonna be another wild one ahead of the storm front coming through that night.
Got the grass along the driveway mowed after I got home and while I was bowing the grass off of me and Champ afterwards, Cuz showed up. We stood out by the shop and talked for a loooooong time. It was almost 9:00 when I got to the house to fix some supper! I was famished.
Hope t didn’t heat up too much down there today.
While we were out there, I was shocked to see flickering all around the place once the sun set. Fireflies are out already! They’re VERY early this year.
The sequence about the Raiders cheerleaders brings back great memories about the USO visit of the Houston Oiler Cheerleaders to Galena, Alaska, in 1976.
They flew in from King Salmon mid morning and were met by staff where they were taken to billeting to settle in. They no sooner got their bags in their doors when they, since it was lunch time, wanted chow with the troops at the dining facility, which is where they ate most of their meals during their stay, two days. They toured the facilities and rehearsed their show in the gym that was set up for them and spent as much time with the troops as they could.
The next day, I set up a drawing from the men that helped paint the gym, and each one got to go to a specially prepared dinner at the club with a cheerleader. I went with the choreographer and the sound man. Then they did their show and packed that night. They flew out the next morning.
Sidelight on the sound man. He was totally Irish. He also worked with Yakov Smirnoff and had tapes of his shows. So he and I sat in my office all night after the show listening, laughing and sipping irish whiskey.
The visit was the highlight of the Christmas time frame and in one instance, when one of our troops PCSed back to the states, he ended up marrying his “date” at the club a couple of months after he reached his new base. A little cupid there.
But for those that couldn’t go home during the Christmas time frame, it was a little home came for them. One of those memories.

Black Haw aka “shoff knudla” trees are in full flower at least two weeks ahead of “schedule”. They usually bloom around Mothers’ Day.
+1
A wonderful story! Thanks for sharing it with us tonight.
Oooo...I thought you were going to say lightning but it was lightning BUGS instead. Love those little fairy lights. I sure wish we had them. But if we did, Dottie would probably eat them. LOL!
Glad that the wind wasn’t as bad today. I went out to sit after my shower, because I felt hot and sweaty afterwards [I hate showers!], and it was too windy. I didn’t stay out long.
