Spirit Airlines has approached the Trump administration about an emergency bailout to keep the beleaguered discount carrier in business and avoid liquidation due to skyrocketing fuel prices, CBS News has learned.
"Spirit is looking for a lifeline," a source familiar told CBS News.
Some Spirit creditors have questioned the airline's ongoing viability and are concerned the airline will not be able to make an upcoming multimillion-dollar debt payment due to surging fuel prices, raising the possibility that the carrier could be forced into liquidation in the near future.
Spirit executives and other low-cost carriers are expected to meet with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy next week. Duffy regularly meets with and checks in with all of the discount carriers, including Frontier, Allegiant, Avelo and Spirit.
The Air Current was the first to report the news about Spirit Airlines seeking government assistance.
Spirit has not responded to CBS News' requests for comment. The Department of Transportation declined to comment.

Gonna set him up
with the Spirit in the sky
The Carnival Cruises of the skies.
What Spirit needs to do is merge with Jetblue, a deal kiboshed by Biden’s retard FTC appointee, Lina Khan. Irobot of Roomba fame is in equally dire straits because Khan nixed a merger with Amazon, leaving it exposed to predation by Chinese rivals backed by government cash.
Change your name to Greyhound.
Just say “no”.
Too late. JetBlue is also in trouble now, and United is now interested in buying them.
Some of the most hilarious “person taken off the plane” videos are from Spirit.
Whoever takes over should definitely make sure they recover the No Fly List from Spirit.
Then again, if they do not obtain that No Fly List, it will just mean more fun videos.
The most outrageous “taken off plane” videos are the ones where the entire plane had to be emptied because of one creep who will not leave.
I was always a cheapskate about flying, but I learned my lesson after one roundtrip with Spirit.
Yikes.
I flew Spirit Airlines.
If Spirit and JetBlue had an anti-Trust problem with the government, I can’t even imagine how those 2 giant carriers would think for a second that it was even possible.
NO! Bring back People’s Express
The 1978 Airline Deregulation Act was supposed to be the end of the government propping up failed airlines. Yet here we are, almost half a century later, and Congress keeps bailing out airlines that failed due to mismanagement or market oversaturation, usually because the bailout bill’s sponsor has a lot of constituents the failure will put out of work.
I watch reruns of TV shows like Mayday. At least one episode involved a crash with a financially distressed airline. The one that did sea planes on South Florida. Chalk?
Spirit airlines charged me $60 for a carry-on even though it fit in their size check at the gate. They better not get a dime from taxpayers.
iRobot is in dire straits because they spun off their defense and law enforcement lines. People only need so many robotic vacuums and mops. Then there is the competition that arose.
Spirit airlines canceled a direct flight from New York to Orlando and replaced it with a one stop flight… New York to Orlando by way of Fort Lauderdale with a four hour layover. No wonder they are going out of business.
Because Continental and United merged, and Delta merged with Northwest Airlines...
It actually makes no sense no matter what, just follow who has paid off whom.
As a commercial developer/builder for 50 years, I’ve been dead bang broke twice. Once was 2008 and once in 1984. The 2008 was caused directly by the banking collapse and the 1984 was caused by an environmental group led by a famous politician suing me to stop a 15 story building. They won, at least temporarily.
NOBODY BAILED ME OUT. I recovered both times and am better off now than ever. And, I NEVER filed bankruptcy. Spirit should try that.

The 2008 crisis was caused by the bust of the housing bubble.
Greedy developers and investors got over extended.
