Zelensky signs law criminalizing antisemitism, making it punishable by up to eight years in prison

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a new law criminalizing antisemitism and making it punishable by up to eight years in prison.

The new law – signed on Holocaust Remembrance Day – amends Article 161 of the Criminal Code on the violation of citizens’ equality based on their race, nationality, religious beliefs, or disability.

This now features the words and “manifestations of antisemitism,” according to the draft law seen by The Jerusalem Post.

Part one of the article relates to deliberate actions aimed at inciting hatred or manifestations of antisemitism and at humiliation of honor and dignity.

Incitement to antisemitism will now be punishable by a fine of “200 to 500 tax-free minimum incomes of citizens,” restriction of liberty for up to five years, or imprisonment for up to three years. In Ukrainian law, “tax-free minimum incomes” refers to a fixed legal unit called the “non-taxable minimum income of citizens,” a standardized amount used to calculate fines typically treated as 17 Ukrainian hryvnias (UAH) per unit.

The second part of the article details punishments for violence, deception, and threats. Here, someone may get a fine of 500 to 1,000 tax-free minimum incomes of citizens or imprisonment for two to five years.

Any of the antisemitic actions set out in parts one and two, if committed by an organized group or causing serious consequences, is punishable by prison sentences of five to eight years.

So much for the talking point that Ukraine is "Nazi."

That is actually a racist law. Criminalizing free speech is a step to fascism. Of course it is at the end of a long line of fascism for Z-man. Maybe he should stand for election, quit kidnapping people off the streets to press them into service.

It’s a stupid law.
You can’t outlaw antisemitism because democrats will just twist the word around so that they can put jews in jail for refusing to lay down and die when they’re told.

Exactly what does that mean?

In this particular case it means Zelenskyy has put Ukrainian law in sync with laws in the EU.

That is the main point, not whatever is wrong with the law itself.

It means Zelensky is criminalising his opposition. d

Zelensky is jewish.

He can whenever it is convenient prosecute his detractors as being anti-Semitic.

Free speech is on the rocks everywhere.

So when Germany outlawed nazi propaganda, it moved toward fascism?

“This is an important and timely step,” Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Azman said on Tuesday. “Ukraine is sending a clear message: Hatred, discrimination, and incitement to violence have no place in Ukrainian society and never will.”

Ironically, yes. Look at the krauts today. Just don't say anything the government doesn't approve of or you'll go to jail.

LOL!! He closed churches and banned religious groups that he claims are associated with the Russian Orthodox Church, but you can’t say anything considered antisemitic.

No country would allow a church to exist that called for its destruction(Holy War).

Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) have supported the war and justified Russia’s aggressive policy since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. There have been very few voices criticising the invasion among the clergy, and any such instances of criticism have been consistently suppressed due to censorship within the church and the state. Over the past few weeks, the ROC’s position has become even more unequivocal and radical. On 27 March, the World Russian People’s Council (Всемирный Русский Народный Собор), an organisation associated with the ROC and chaired by Patriarch Kirill, published a policy paper in which the war in Ukraine was called a “holy war”. The document identified the “West immersed in Satanism” as the main enemy of Russia and the Russian people and one which poses a threat not only to them but also to the entire Russian civilisation and Christian religion, from which it (the West) has turned away.

Exactly what does that mean?

What do you think it means?

Some Russia supporters here have accused Ukraine of having a Nazi government because of the Azov Battalion. But this law proves the Ukraine government is not Nazi.

Semites include Arabs and Abyssinians. Anti-Jewish people will start speaking in code, and some will get in legal trouble who are not anti-Jewish.

This is a very bad idea.

So what you’re saying is that there’s no free speech in Ukraine. People in this country say the same things about America, the Jews and the Catholic Church, but we haven’t yet passed laws to ban it.

Only the dumb will think this law is anti-fascist. It is a prime example of fascism.... criminalizing speech. Europe continues to demonstrate is unbreakable dedication to totalitarianism.
