~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Marine Corps Air Station
New River, North Carolina

NCmcasnewriver3

Marine Corps Air Station New River is a United States Marine Corps helicopter and tilt-rotor base in Jacksonville, North Carolina, in the eastern part of the state. In 1972, the airfield was named McCutcheon Field for General Keith B. McCutcheon, one of the fathers of Marine Corps helicopter aviation. Near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, it shares some facilities with Camp Geiger.

The Air Station was the first Marine Corps base with the new MV-22 Osprey. It has the ability to fly like a plane, and take off and land like a helicopter. The MV-22 has replaced all of the CH-46E Sea Knights on the east coast with the exception of HMX-1 and HMM-774. Currently there are six operational Osprey squadrons, VMM-261, VMM-263, VMM-162, VMM-365, VMM-266, and VMMT-204.

The mission of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing is to conduct air operations in support of the Marine Forces to include offensive air support, antiair warfare, assault support, aerial reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and control of aircraft and missiles.

The Osprey is the world's first production tiltrotor aircraft, with one three-bladed proprotor, turboprop engine, and transmission nacelle mounted on each wingtip. It is classified as a powered lift aircraft by the Federal Aviation Administration. For takeoff and landing, it typically operates as a helicopter with the nacelles vertical and rotors horizontal.

Once airborne, the nacelles rotate forward 90° in as little as 12 seconds for horizontal flight, converting the V-22 to a more fuel-efficient, higher speed turboprop aircraft. STOL rolling-takeoff and landing capability is achieved by having the nacelles tilted forward up to 45°. Other orientations are possible. Pilots describe the V-22 in airplane mode as comparable to the C-130 in feel and speed. It has a ferry range of over 2,100 nmi. Its operational range is 1,100 nmi.

Composite materials make up 43% of the airframe, and the proprotor blades also use composites. For storage, the V-22's rotors fold in 90 seconds and its wing rotates to align, front-to-back, with the fuselage. Because of the requirement for folding rotors, their 38-foot diameter is 5 feet less than optimal for vertical takeoff, resulting in high disk loading.

Most missions use fixed wing flight 75% or more of the time, reducing wear and tear and operational costs. This fixed wing flight is higher than typical helicopter missions allowing longer range line-of-sight communications for improved command and control.

Hi, Janey! Good to see you tonight. Are you busy with the air-ubering now that spring breaks are occurring?

Re-post of this awesome story for anyone you missed it in my prior Canteen post. This is worth sharing with your Vietnam veteran buddies.

He Disobeyed Orders and Saved Lives | Captain Larry Taylor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bn8-fkYHsw

https://www.youtube.com/@TheFirstMedals

Captain Larry Taylor made a decision that defied protocol, risked everything, and saved lives. With American soldiers surrounded and under heavy enemy fire, he flew directly into danger—landing where no one else would—to bring them home.

This is the story of that mission.

Featured at the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center and central to the Larry Taylor Exhibit, this film captures the intensity of the moment, the weight of the decision, and the legacy that followed. Through firsthand accounts, historical insight, and powerful visuals, experience the reality behind the Medal of Honor.

This isn’t just history—it’s a moment where courage changed the outcome.

Sleep does wonders. LOL

It was cloudy and coolish here today. There were a few showers in TN but nothing here so I was able to finish along the driveway and knock down the jungle at the end of the house where the field lines are. VERY thick and tall.
The front and back yard can wait.
