US military starts removing mines from Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. military has launched operations to begin de-mining the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) said on Saturday. Centcom said in a social media post highlighted by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that two Navy guided-missile destroyers began “setting conditions” for this mission on Saturday morning.
The USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy have previously operated in the Arabian Gulf to help clear the strait of sea mines set by Tehran, according to Centcom.
“Today, we began the process of establishing a new passage and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce,” Centcom Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said in the post.
The strait is a critical trading corridor, particularly for global energy markets. About a fifth of the world’s oil consumption flows through the passage on a daily basis.

All this “mines” talk is an intoxication game between Iran and the USA.
Actually, military sources say Iran has not put any mines in the area. And the US plays along pretending to believe Iran has put mines there… But again there are none.
Two US destroyers went through the Hormuz Strait today, and those ships can CERTAINLY NOT eliminate any hypothetical mines anyway! A destroyer can’t do that. Period.
What remains dangerous are Iranian drones that could be launched at tankers, they don’t need mines.

I trust that our military leaders have thought of this contingency before making this move.

What remains dangerous are Iranian drones that could be launched at tankers, they don’t need mines. Besides, a mine is a terrible thing to waste.

Forgive USSR-FRANCE. He’s French, he can’t act any better. He is just channeling his inner Philippe Pétain so he/she/them cannot help but go all Vichy French us. I’m sure he/she/them practices his surrender speech every day.

My sincere apologies! I assumed your gender when I really don’t know. I used “practices his surrender speech every day” when I should have said “practices his/her/their surrender speech every day.” I feel much better now. What a relief.

This situation represents the culmination of what appears to be long preparation:
Orders to decommission four Avenger-class minesweepers based in Bahrain were executed in September 2025. The decommissioning process was carried out in a series of ceremonies:
- USS Dextrous (MCM-13) was decommissioned on September 3, 2025.
- USS Gladiator (MCM-11) was decommissioned on September 4, 2025.
- USS Sentry (MCM-3) was decommissioned on September 24, 2025.
- USS Devastator (MCM-6), the final ship, was decommissioned on September 25, 2025, during a ceremony that formally recognized the end of service for all four vessels.
The decision and planning for this fleet-wide decommissioning were part of the Navy's end-of-fiscal-year 2025 drawdown, with the official announcements and ceremonies occurring throughout that month. The dedicated mine-sweeping function was replaced with three LCS ships equipped with the Mine Countermeasures (MCM) Mission Package. Three LCS were present at the beginning of Epic Fury and had been tested for mine sweeping operations: USS Tulsa (LCS-16) and USS Canberra (LCS-30) were operating in the Persian Gulf. USS Santa Barbara (LCS-32) was deployed in the Strait of Hormuz.
