Negative views of Israel, Netanyahu continue to rise among Americans – especially young people
Pew Research Center ^ | April 7, 2026 | Laura Silver

Americans have increasingly negative views of Israel and its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

* 60% of U.S. adults have an unfavorable view of Israel, up from 53% last year.

* 59% have little or no confidence in Netanyahu to do the right thing regarding world affairs – up from 52% last year.

* In both political parties, majorities of adults under the age of 50 now rate Israel and Netanyahu negatively.

The survey was conducted March 23-29 among 3,507 U.S. adults. It was fielded about a month into the U.S.- and Israeli-led war in Iran....

Eight-in-ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents currently have an unfavorable view of Israel, up from 69% last year and 53% in 2022. Democrats under 50 are slightly more likely than older Democrats to say they have a very unfavorable view of Israel (47% vs. 39%).

More Republicans and Republican leaners have a favorable than unfavorable view of Israel (58% vs. 41%). Still, the share of Republicans with a negative view has ticked up since last year, driven by those under 50. Today, 57% of Republicans ages 18 to 49 have an unfavorable opinion of Israel, up from 50% last year. Large majorities of Republicans 50 and older continue to view Israel positively.

Views of Israel also differ substantially among U.S. religious groups that are large enough to analyze. Jewish Americans and White evangelical Protestants have mostly positive views of Israel, at 64% and 65%, respectively.

Favorable views of Israel are much less common among White nonevangelical Protestants (39%), Catholics (35%), Black Protestants (33%) and the religiously unaffiliated (22%) – that is, people who say they are atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular.” Among Muslim Americans, only 4% see Israel positively.

This contradicts the popular narrative on FR that American Jews hate Israel.

What would young people think of Netanyahu if he sent forces into the American Embassy and took everyone in there hostage for over a year?

Netanyahu started his career as PM of Israel during Bill Clinton's FIRST term in office.

I can't think of any American with a brain who would consider a clown from the 1990s to be a credible national political figure in this country today.

Let's go dig up Bob Dole's remains and run them for President, eh?

My own take is that the split between liberals and conservatives in a decade or two will be between the anti-Israel, pro-Arab Left and a Right that isn't anti-Israel, but doesn't kowtow to its every geopolitical whim either. In other words, the Israelis will have to contend with either leftist hostility or right-wing indifference due to rational self-interest. Among the right, only the Rapture loons will remain hardcore Zionist.

This contradicts the popular narrative on FR that American Jews hate Israel

I have no idea where this talking point came from. It's true that some far-left Jews (e.g. Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn) are/were anti-Israel, but they're a fringe minority even among Jewish liberals. Most Jewish liberals are more like Alan Dershowitz or Abe Foxman, i.e. very much pro-Israel and often single issue voters/donors based on US policy towards Isarel.

Some trust ‘arla snak bar’ more than the PDJT administration. Why? Because they have ZERO real world experience. Probably wouldn’t know oppression if it kicked them in the teeth.

Why? Because some people have become cynical through experience. They see an allegedly MAGA administration that seems to be fixated on this bizarre sort of "Sunni Judaism" and they don't give a sh!t anymore.

Who the hell cares what the “young people” think. Americans are going to have to find somebody to run America when it’s this batch of “young peoples’” turn. All they are interested in is working out a some gym, going hiking, pokin’ their cell phones and laughing at the Late Night TV stooges.

Who the hell cares what the “young people” think.

Old people die off, while the young take their place. Thus, the young are the future political majority.

If you don't care what the future thinks, okay.

Netanyahu’s time on the world stage like Trump’s is about to end.

And when it does, Israel will be in a better place than when either entered upon the stage.

Therefore Netanyahu’s favorability in the US is of little matter just as Trump understands his favorability will no longer affect his course or his decisions.
