Oregon will give every one of its prison inmates their own personal tablet - and bosses insist there is a very sensible reason to do so

Oregon is rolling out tablets to all state prisoners, a strategy officials say could help stem the influx of illicit substances into its prisons.

Any mail an inmate receives will be digitally scanned and then sent directly to their tablet, eliminating any opportunities for hidden drugs to be unknowingly ferried to their cell, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections.

Corrections officials have said these changes will happen gradually, adding that they are aiming to get the tablets in the hands of prisoners by September.

There are roughly 12,000 people in state custody who may soon be able to watch movies, play games and message their family members with their own personal device.

Besides unduly soaking taxpaying citizens, what could possibly go wrong.

How long before someone bludgeons another inmate with their tablet?

A Xerox would do the same thing.

That’s messed up on two levels. One, having access to a tablet is giving them a crime committing portal.

And two, for the decent ones, a letter from home is more than scanned words on a paper. It’s holding that paper, knowing your loved one touched it, seeing the crayon picture your kid drew. It’s cold to just see it scanned on a screen. Just check the envelopes for dope and give them the letter.

A lot of people think it’s fun to dehumanize them all you can, but 95% of them are walking outta there one day. Something to keep in mind.

Heap enough free gifts onto prisoners and people will commit crimes just to get in.

I serve as a chaplain to 1200 inmates in a regional jail in Virginia. Mail from outside never comes into the facility to reach the inmates. They read digital copies of their mail on their tablets. They are also able to access a very diverse collection of reading material. I see it as a plus.

Every single occupancy cell should be equipped with a sturdy bar or hook, a length of rope and a step stool. Give the criminals a choice.

Single occupancy, or they’d be hanging each other.

There are many more ways to route drugs to inmates than through the mail , which is heavily screened already. Most is smuggled in by prison employees.

Get them hooked on TikTok and they’ll never leave the jail cells.

So they will block the porn sites? And gaming sites? And messenger apps?

Sounds like a bad idea. But it’s Oregon.

It’s just a matter of time before parts of Darknets, or The Dark Web; i.e.
Dischord, 4Chan, certain BitCoins and others make their appearance on those tablets.

I agree. I think prisons should be humane with a focus on releasing repentant and productive citizens, not hardened, bitter convicts.

This being said, I think we should be executing far more people, and doing so quickly.

The rabid dog criminals just need to be put down. They're not going to be rehabilitated.

There's no reason for life sentences or even 20 years. Prison sentences should be five years max. If you are such a threat to society that five years behind bars isn't enough time to fix you, then you probably just need to be culled from the herd.

It was around that time they forgot illegal immigration is illegal. Or that criminals are the villains, not the victims. Or that freedom means to do what you want, not force others to do what you want.
