In a recent and viral announcement, Joe Kent resigned as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center. In the letter, he accused the Trump administration of bowing to Israeli lobby pressure on Iran. He also stated that Iran (a nation that regularly proclaims “death to America”) “posed no imminent threat to our nation.”
The reactions were mixed: A sharp rebuke from the White House, praise from Marjorie Taylor Greene, and a podcast appearance with Tucker Carlson. In the end, though, this move by Kent was not principled or patriotic.
Instead, this move displayed a tried-and-true career-advancement strategy of so-called Republicans: betray the Trump administration and reap the rewards of newfound fame. These are people who could never achieve the fame they craved through their actual work. So, they found a shortcut: backstab and undercut President Trump. Ultimately, with the midterms and 2028 looming, there is no more room for this infighting.
Kent himself is the most recent case study. He is a twice-failed congressional candidate who squandered a Republican seat after primarying the incumbent. Kent then lost two House elections and was handed a lifeline through his government appointment. Then, at an opportune moment, he decided to sacrifice service to the nation in favor of personal brand building.
Unfortunately, Kent is one of many government figures to execute this playbook. Indeed, this class of defectors spans all three branches of the federal government.
The first group in this class is the “Republican” members of Congress. For example, Liz Cheney is a carpetbagger who moved her family from Northern Virginia to Wyoming in 2012 to run for Congress.

Joe Kent will wind up as a consultant to the Council on Foreign Relations, with a great book deal for a book no one will read, and as an “analyst” on CNBC
How much do these gigs pay compared to his previous job?
It’s funny. He won the nomination for a Washington state house seat(purple) claiming the incumbent republican wasn’t MAGA enough. Then he goes on to blow the general-it’s gone.
That’s some weak cope. If the current admin was indeed “winning” there would be more career advancement in staying put rather than resigning. People would be FIGHTING to get on the winning admin team for coattail effects. Instead we’ve seeing a steady trend of shedding supporters since the second term began. To argue that it is more profitable to jump ship is admitting the failures of the current admin.
Massie is doing that too.

Joe Kent didn't squander anything in his two House races. He lost because he ran as a MAGA candidate in a "moderate" district and was completely undermined by establishment GOP voters.
I would have given him more credibility with his resignation fiasco if his own military resume didn't undermine it. I have a hard time believing anyone could be so ignorant that he'd suddenly decide "the U.S. was fighting wars for Israel" after he did 11 combat tours, mostly in Iraq himself over the course of 20 years.
This captures the GOP political standing in April 2026 perfectly:
Kent will soon join the cavalcade of CNN losers with the likes of President Avenatti.
I have a hard time believing anyone could be so ignorant that he'd suddenly decide "the British were fighting for Freedom and the Americans were the bad guys" after he so bravely and heroically trounced the Redcoats at Saratoga.
In some ways, the guy comes across as a complete moron.
That agency has been a source of grief for America since its founding. Should be an immediate disqualification for employment anywhere.
Yeah he betrayed the Trump administration. Why the F do these people keep getting hired in the first place?
He imagines his first name is Clark.
Truman said that signing the law to create the CIA was his biggest mistake. IIRC.
