Donald Trump threatened to stop supplying weapons for Ukraine in order to pressure European allies to join a “coalition of the willing” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to people briefed on the discussions.

The strait has been in effect closed by Iran after the US and Israel attacked the Islamic republic in late February, choking a route through which a fifth of the world’s oil typically passes.

“coalition of the willing”

I think it would be more like a coalition of the begrudging.

A) Trump doesn't "threaten" anything

B) See "A"

Yup.

Although I guess he could always say, " It depends on what the meaning of the word, 'willing' is."

Which begs the question of why the U.S. involvement with Ukraine didn’t end within 24 hours of Trump’s second inauguration.

I think he began to see some advantages to Russia being bogged down in Ukraine.

For one thing, finally dealing with Iran after 47 years of letting it fester, has been a lot simpler without the other two super powers weighing in.

One has to wonder if President Trump’s trade war with China and continued support for Ukraine may have been at least partially intended to isolate Iran from its allies prior to the strike.

“Which begs the question of why the U.S. involvement with Ukraine didn’t end within 24 hours of Trump’s second inauguration.”

The best that I can come up with is the following:
1) - Once we ended involvement, then Ukraine would be forced to settle with Russia and anything short of Ukraine seizing Moscow would go down as a loss to whoever is in the White House.
2) - The Neocons told Trump that, somehow, with enough aid, Ukraine could seize Moscow and somehow do that without starting a nuclear war - and Trump, for whatever reason, campaigns against the Neocons, but then invites them in to wreck his presidency. The evidence for that is that Graham is effectively in charge of foreign policy.

“I thought we already stopped giving Ukraine weapons?”

With the Neocons effectively running things, it’s likely under-the-table now. But even publicly, we are still sending weapons, but, officially, Europe is paying for it. And we’ve never shut off intelligence for any substantial amount of time.

Basically Trump is operating under the Biden policy regarding Ukraine, although it’s costing the US a bit less money.

There are two sides to that. With our air defenses practically exhausted from Ukraine, we’re taking some pretty big blows trying to fight Iran and now we seem to have given up on defeating them (although that could change tomorrow).

Is it a trade war ?

US oks Russian oil to China for the next year.

US will allow Russia to sell oil to China via the Kazakhstan pipeline .

US Allows Kazakhstan to Continue Transit of Russian Oil to China

The US administration will allow Kazakhstan to continue transiting Russian pipeline crude to China until next March, according to the Central Asian nation’s energy ministry.

Following consultations with the US Treasury, a waiver was extended until March 19, 2027, the ministry’s spokeswoman Asel Serikpayeva said Wednesday in an email.

Key Details of Russia-Kazakhstan-China Oil Transit:

Pipeline Usage: The oil is transported via the Kazakhstan-China pipeline, with negotiations underway to increase the volume to 12.5 million tons annually.

Legal Framework: The transit operates under an intergovernmental agreement between Moscow and Astana, which runs until 2034.

U.S. Sanctions Exemption: The U.S. Treasury Department's OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) extended the license exemption until March 19, 2027, permitting the transaction.

Strategic Importance: The transit provides China with consistent crude supply while aiding Russia in exporting, amid geopolitical challenges in the Middle East that have impacted oil capacities.

Don’t agree with any of that.

Not nearly exhausted.
Not taking fairly big blows.
Not giving up on defeating them.
Not likely to change tomorrow.

“actually, it was because the paleocon neo isolationists have been wrong all along”

First amendment says that you can state what you wish, but HISTORY states otherwise, and it can be summed up in a very simple manner: When Ukraine was left to itself, for 23 years, Russia left it alone and no one was threatened, in either direction; When the Neocons decided to make Ukraine a forward staging area against Russia, Russia acted to prevent that.

In case anyone was wondering how much 12.5 million tons of oil is .

Choosing either US short or Metric tons and some variations by product type we arrive at this.

For 12.5 million tons of average crude oil, the volume is approximately 3.85 billion US gallons (if using metric tonnes) or 3.49 billion US gallons (if using US short tons).

Sounds like a life line to China with Russia making a little cash on the side.
