Several of the United States' closest allies in Europe have curbed U.S. military access to their airspace or bases on their territory, a sign of further rupture that European officials have sought to play down despite obvious anger from the White House.
The limits on access for U.S. jets and weapons heading for the Middle East to strike Iran come after European nations were caught off guard by the start of U.S.-Israeli operations on February 28, then quickly distanced themselves from the aerial bombardment now well into its fifth week with no visible end in sight.
Thousands of specialized U.S. Army paratroopers started to arrive in the region in recent days, further fueling concerns that the U.S. could escalate the conflict by invading Iranian soil even as President Donald Trump insists the U.S. is in talks with Tehran.
Trump on Tuesday accused France of closing its airspace to aircraft carrying weapons for the war to Israel, just hours after it emerged that Italy's government had refused permission for U.S. bombers bound for the Middle East to land at one of its bases.
Spain has publicly said it has shuttered its airspace to any U.S. military flights linked to the war and blocked U.S. access to two major bases in the south of the country.
The U.K., which has long touted a special relationship with the U.S., was forced to greenlight American forces using British bases for operations targeting Iran earlier this month after insisting U.S. personnel could use the facilities only for defense. The British government announced on Tuesday that it would send extra troops and air defense systems to the Middle East.

Increasingly, I don’t see what sense there is for the US to remain in NATO.
What’s in it for us?
Time to leave Nato and kick the worthless UN out.
NATO should have been closed down after the fall of the Soviet Union.
Just wait until they need our help.
And they’re the ones who need safe delivery of the oil.
Norway had better get cranking.
Just say no to NATO and the UN.
But boy have they been wanting US troops committed to the Ukraine meat grinder while they sit back, fighting the war they want, with a full court propaganda campaign for years now, touting the 'alliance'.
I suspect there is some blackmail involved by the IRGC. You want oil?? You play our game or else.
What’s in it for us is to sacrifice our time, our brains, our military, and our money for a bunch of ingrates. They’re like wild animals that have grown accustomed to be fed by humans, thereby forgetting how to fend for themselves. NATO and the European countries are going to regret this.
They care so little for their people that they won’t even let US protect them.
They already need our help.
And of course, the always maligned United States always comes through, regardless how we’re treated in return.
We’re like a battered wife...
If that controversial Wall Street Journal report is true then Trump is getting fed up and may leave Iran, with the Strait left to the Europeans who need it open while the US has needs it for under 1%.

It’s basically just a means to sell US armaments to someone.
Announce that we will not stop artillery or fighter jets from Iran if headed to Spain and similar countries.
The sole purpose of NATO is to protect Europe. It will never protect the U.S.
Pull everything from Europe. All equipment, nukes, and personnel. Then watch portions of each country struggle with the economic loss.
They’ll be happy. They look down on the U.S. We can concentrate on the Pacific and parts of the Atlantic. The Russians will love that.
The Western Hemisphere is ours and the Pacific. The rest doesn’t exist except for trade.
Agreed, the USSR does not exist anymore and either does the Warsaw Pact! There is no need for us to be in NATO.
The blame in Spain falls mainly
on the insane in Lorraine.
