US farmers hit as fuel and fertilizer costs surge due to war
The American Bazaar ^ | March 29, 2026 | Jayujoti Mullick

The global energy shock triggered by the ongoing Iran war is rippling through the United States farm sector, where soaring input costs are placing US farmers under severe financial strain and raising concerns about future food prices...

The closure and instability around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil and fertilizer shipments, have pushed fuel prices sharply higher and tightened supplies of key agricultural inputs.

The result is a double blow for US farmers already dealing with tight margins. Higher input costs reduce profitability, while uncertainty about supply availability complicates planting decisions. In some cases, farmers are delaying purchases or cutting back on fertilizer use, which could ultimately affect crop yields.

The impact extends beyond the farm. Analysts warn that reduced agricultural output, combined with higher production costs, could translate into increased food prices for consumers. The war’s broader economic effects are already contributing to inflationary pressures, with energy costs feeding into nearly every part of the supply chain. The situation reflects a wider global trend.

For US farmers, the crisis underscores how deeply interconnected agriculture is with global energy markets. Fuel powers machinery, fertilizer boosts productivity and transport networks ensure crops reach markets. When any of these links are strained, the entire system feels the impact.

Jayujoti Mullick sounds like she may be a fertilizer expert or something. What would America ever do without all of these foreign “experts?”

No kidding.

These appeasers are really something.

We farm and we haven’t been hit anymore than we were when Briben was dogging farmers.

Where were these whiners and their nonstop fearp0rn, fake news posts, then?

Yet another unheard of “news” outlet running a story designed to degrade support for the admin. This is part of a very well funded propaganda op.

Just in time for planting season. So cost of shelf items will rise.

How many more bombs do we need to drop for Iran to give in? I suggest all of them at this poiint since we’re committed.

Good news for Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Fertilizer runoff has resulted in a population explosion of Crown of Thorns Starfish. The Starfish have been destroying the reef. Less runoff fertilizer means less Starfish.

Did you have your panties twisted when farming costs actually went up and farmers were actually hit, under Briben?

How did those ‘cost of shelf items’ work out for you, then?

As I said, upthread....we farm and we haven’t been ‘hit’ any harder than we were under Briben.

Don’t we make fertilizer in the US? Florida? Wyoming? All of the urea from the meat packing plants? Plus all of the manure?

The IR cannot be allowed to hold the world hostage to ensure their continued rein of terror. This should have been done decades ago.

I have had several tree service/loggers over to my house in the last few weeks. I want to take down about twenty trees or more and do some excavation work on my driveway. All of them were complaining about the spike in diesel prices. That is was going to effect they price they would quote me to just move and operate their machinery.

Then they all had to tell me how expensive it was to fill their Dodge/Chevy/Ford F250 full size pick up truck.

I am sure these guys all complained when oil was $150/barrel during the Obama years too. I asked one of them IF he would have rather had a nuclear armed Iran? We both agreed they had deserved an A$$ kicking for the last 47 years.
These were all salt of the earth type guys.

Last thought regarding this. All of the guys I called including commercial loggers got back to me within 24 hours of my call. Most of them the same day. Some literally within minutes or took my inbound call. Then all made an appointment to come out within a few days.
I have 12 acres. So, I was trying to get a logger to swap 50+ trees for the cost of removal and excavation.
I probably am going to need a crane.

My point is they all NEED work now. It is NOT like 2020-2023 when these guys were SO busy that half of them would not have returned my call.
I am in south central NH.

Logging demand is down....even though Pres Trump has opened up federal lands, for logging. We overbuilt the housing market, under Briben. Hopefully, that settles out, soon.

Good for you that you had your calls returned so quickly.

Best wishes on your clearing project.

A neighbor is replacing their driveway with pavers. Gorgeous installation. I contacted the company to get a bid to replace our 74 year old asphalt driveway (yes, really that old!) with pavers. The price was agreeable but then the war cratered the stock market and there went our new driveway. Last week I told the company owner the project is off. He told me he is hearing that on a lot of jobs he has bid recently.
