Pentagon prepares for weeks of ground operations in Iran
The Washington Post ^ | March 28, 2026

The Pentagon is preparing for weeks of ground operations in Iran, U.S. officials said, as thousands of American soldiers and Marines arrive in the Middle East for what could become a dangerous new phase of the war should President Donald Trump choose to escalate.

Any potential ground operation would fall short of a full-scale invasion and could instead involve raids by a mixture of Special Operations forces and conventional infantry troops, said the officials. All spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss highly sensitive military plans that have been in development for weeks.

Discussions within the administration over the past month have touched upon the possible seizure of Kharg Island, a key Iranian oil export hub in the Persian Gulf, and raids into other coastal areas near the Strait of Hormuz to find and destroy weapons that can target commercial and military shipping, officials said. One person said that the objectives under consideration would probably take “weeks, not months” to complete. Another put the potential timeline at “a couple of months.”

In 2003, the Dubya Bush administration put almost 500,000 troops in Kuwait to invade Iraq.

The numbers, even a few tens of thousands now in 2026, do not make the case for any ground operation.

It will just be for two weeks. It’s always 2 weeks. They should call it the “Fortnight War.”

550,000 soldiers and Marines could not control the terrain of tiny Vietnam and 58,000 of them died trying.

Regime change in German took 300+ allied divisions and almost four years of sustained ground combat.

Do the math.

“All spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss highly sensitive military plans that have been in development for weeks.”

Leave it to the rag we call the WaaaaaaaPo to try to disclose plans and put our warriors in danger - they, and the “anonymous sources” need to be charged with treason...

Okay. I did. There isn’t going to be a ground invasion.

Is that your point?

It’s mine also.

The math says there are no Iranian ground forces worth a damn.

Iran conducted war with the world using Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthi troops. At home Iran relied on missiles and drones for defense. There is no Army in the field worth a damn

When I hit a Paywall, I highlight the headline and do a search - other rags carried it and cited the WaaaaaPo

Posted this on other sites...

@washingtonpost

Original story on the WaPo - which rag thinks people will pay to view their tripe..

The ground invasion is going to take place.

The ground invasion is already well in process in the former state of Minnesota.

The Border Patrol ground invasion will be a reality in Los Angeles and Philadelphia and San Francisco.

America is going to be cleansed of the left wing cancer

Since so many Arab states have been attacked, perhaps some Arab ground troops could have a role? They wouldn’t even have to be good, or to engage in real combat. Just have some sort of armored column move in a particular direction; force the IRGC to come out to meet them. Then the US attacks from the air and destroys the IRGC before they make contact with the Arab forces. The Kurds could also fill this role, but I guess a lot of people in the region don’t want the Kurds involved.

If nothing else the physical presence of all these troops provides for extra motivation for the bad guys to make deals.

“550,000 soldiers and Marines could not control the terrain of tiny Vietnam and 58,000 of them died trying.”

Sure they could, and they did. Politics kept them from waging a proper war, not their capabilities.

Learn history instead of embarrassing yourself like this all the time.

...Do the math..

Not the same. The Germans mostly believed in Hitler. This whole mess in Iran started because the people were revolting against the regime and it responded by massacring thousands. It certainly succeeded in making them afraid but definitely not any more popular. Take away that fear and that regime will collapse.
