US Senate votes to fund Homeland Security to end airports chaos - but ICE excluded

The US Senate has voted to end a partial 40-day government shutdown, approving funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - but with immigration enforcement excluded.

The almost six-week funding lapse has had a knock-on effect on air travel in the US. Airport security workers' salaries are paid by the DHS, and hundreds have quit since the shutdown began.

Democrats had refused to agree a funding deal without reforms to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, but the Senate reached unanimous agreement in the early hours of Friday morning after stripping ICE and parts of border protection out of the measure.

The deal now faces a vote in the House of Representatives.

It is hoped that the fresh package can bring an end to widespread disruption at airports across the US, where travellers have faced hours-long queues due to a shortage of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at security checkpoints.

Around 50,000 agents with the TSA - which sits under the DHS - have been working without pay since mid-February due to the shutdown. This has reduced the number turning up to work each day and led to hundreds quitting.

A BBC reporter at Houston airport reported on Thursday night that, after waiting about two hours in a winding queue across one floor, frazzled travellers went up an escalator thinking they had reached the end - only to find another long line stretching towards security.

Currently, only a third to 50% of its TSA checkpoints are operating, according to Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for the Houston Airport System.

A few hours before the Senate vote, US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that he would sign an executive order "to immediately pay out TSA Agents".

RE: approving funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - but with immigration enforcement excluded.

But I thought ICE was already funded through 2029? So, what’s this all about?

ICE is already funded all the way thru 2029, providing about $75 BILLION in multi year funding. So, it’s not wanting for dough right now.

My concern is how the TSA will recruit employees to replace the ones that quit instead of working without continuing pay. When faced with eviction notices and no pay, the choice is obvious.

How do you recruit with the frequent shutdown occurrences?

Yep. Just like the DA who said he would personally put ICE agents in handcuffs and would not allow Trump to pardon them. Another Soros bought, low IQ bureaucrat making boasts to impress other low IQ Rat constituents for the sole purpose of his own job security.

“My concern is how the TSA will recruit ... “

Last year, the ones that came to work got a $10,000 bonus.

It's like European restaurants. You get everything you want, except ice.

(And when you drink the lukewarm water, your response is to remember the European Union as you say, "EU.")

I'm tired of decades of kabuki theater. It's time to listen to our Revolutionary forebears. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they want to have a war,—let it begin here.”

Not just a headline. It's everywhere.

It's a Ministry of Truth slogan.

They are funded through 2029. It's just the BBC and other liberal rags leaving out the actual facts like they usually do.

There are plenty of people who want to work for the government in almost any form. That is because once you are hired it is almost impossible to be fired.
It is job security at its utmost.

My younger brother worked for the federal bureau of prisons until he retired at the old age of 56. He started straight out of college at 22. His wife retired at 49. Also started after college.
When my brother took that job me and my other two brothers scoffed at it. Why would he take a government job?
We kind of laughed about it.

He was the first of us to retire. Ten years younger than my oldest sibling.
WHO’S laughing now?

TSA job is a pretty easy one.
Stand there and move bins around while you yell at Americans for not knowing the current method of the hr.
Belts off, shoes on...laptops in, laptops out, stand here, no stand over there.

That's the hypocrisy in all this. The Dems messed up a whole industry and our securioty......

hoping that enough "sheep" realize who's responsible for the shutdown when they go to vote.
