Iran has been laying traps and moving additional military personnel and air defenses to Kharg Island in recent weeks in preparation for a possible US operation to take control of the island, according to multiple people familiar with US intelligence reporting on the issue.
The Trump administration has been weighing using US troops to seize the tiny island in the northeastern Persian Gulf as leverage over the Iranians to coerce them to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, CNN has reported.
But US officials and military experts say there would be significant risks involved in such a ground operation, including a large number of US casualties. The island has layered defenses, and the Iranians have moved additional shoulder-fired, surface-to-air guided missile systems known as MANPADs there in recent weeks, the sources said.
Iran has also been laying traps including anti-personnel and anti-armor mines around the island, the sources said, including on the shoreline where US troops could possibly stage an amphibious landing if President Donald Trump moved forward with a ground operation.
Some allies of the president are raising serious questions about whether there is a need to attempt such an operation, since successfully taking the island would not, on its own, resolve problems related to the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s stranglehold on the global energy market, the source added.
The US military had already targeted Kharg with strikes on March 13.
An Israeli source said there is concern that taking control of Kharg would lead to attacks by Iranian drones and shoulder-fired missiles, leading to the deaths of American troops. “The hope is that they won’t take that risk and will instead fire at the oil fields, but there is no way to know,” this source said.
Two Marine Expeditionary Units have recently deployed to the Middle East.

Of course it's a given that there are risks in such an operation. We don't need experts to know that.
Complete gaslighting. The media just making crap up.
As if we haven’t been watching exactly what they’re doing there...but yeah...cnn so.....
I am skeptical that there is any boat approaching or leaving Kharg that isn’t being blown to smithereens.
Pretty much going to assume this entire article is nothing but an exercise in creative writing from CNN.
Why bomb, invade that crappy little island and lose valuable AMERICAN lives when our special ops troops, which are already on their way or there already, can sneak in, take out what needs to be taken out and rig everything with explosives - so if those iranian troops stationed there decided to push back, the whole place goes bang. This should be a classic invasion of Europe situation - pretend to start an attack on Kharg to draw their focus their while actually hitting them elsewhere. Both options workable.
Yeah, and this is not 1945, and our Marines, Soldiers, Airmen, and Sailors have more in their arsenal than M1s and mortars to take an island. A whole array of horrors awaits the poor conscripts on that island. America is really good, the best that has ever existed, at extinguishing human life. They wll hear the screams on the mainland.
Fake CNN stories should make them complicit with the IRGC and should be indicted for conspiring with the enemy.
Bomb the mainland pumps.
As often as necessary.
Cheap. Virtually riskless. Repeatable. No boots.
Dear CNN: .Maybe you want to rethink that...
Recall the “island” in Iraq during Trump’s first term? Isis and associated dregs fled there for safety. Trump bombed it stupid.
It’s plausible but, if true, a tremendous waste of resources by the Iranians.
One, we probably won’t invade.
Two, fixed fortifications of this nature (assuming the Iranians are doing this) are carefully analyzed and easily defeated. They would serve as a monument to the IRGC’s stupidity.
They are good at killing unarmed civilians but going up against the best military on the planet will be devastating for them. Just concentrating enough forces on the island to put up a credible defense is going be devastating. Having zero air defense will be very destructive when we bomb them.
Duh. The world knows we’re coming.
Does the brainless idiot think the Iranians are making cookies and lemonade?
CNN is the official network of the Mullahs.
Anything just to make Tucker, Candice and Megyn’s acolytes dig in a little deeper.
What tools...

I am beginning to suspect that the threat to take Kharg island may be a diversion to draw Iranian forces out of hiding and away from the real target.
The glory of the marines was in their amphibious assaults weather it be Iwo Jima or Tripoli. Let’s hope those in charge don’t invade the island just for those purposes.
Do you drink ?
