Russia warns Finland it will be more vulnerable if it hosts nuclear weapons
Reuters ^ | 3/6/26 | Dmitry Antonov

MOSCOW, March 6 (Reuters) - Russia said on Friday it would respond if Finland placed nuclear weapons on its territory, saying such a move would make the Nordic country more vulnerable.

‌The Kremlin reacted sharply after NATO member Finland said on Thursday it was planning to lift a longstanding ban on hosting such weapons, in a move that could open the door to placing them there during times of war. "This is a statement that leads to an escalation of tensions on the European continent," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"This statement adds to Finland's vulnerability, a vulnerability provoked by the actions of the Finnish authorities. The fact is that by deploying nuclear weapons on its territory, Finland is beginning to threaten us. And if Finland threatens us, we take appropriate measures."

The Finnish shift is part of a wider rethink of European deterrence that has prompted France to offer to extend the protection of its nuclear arsenal to other allies on the continent.

The changes are being driven by Russia's war in Ukraine and the unpredictable behaviour of U.S. President Donald Trump - notably his threat to take over Greenland - which has unsettled his NATO allies.

According to Putin, it’s cool for Russia to put nukes in Belarus, not no visa versa.

Wake up, non history major (or minor, for that matter).

In WW2, finland, like Ukraine, allied itself with Hitler. Yeah, they were fighting Stalin. Nonetheless, any country has to be a little leery of neighbors who used to act like rabid dogs. Look at the fascist groups operating openly in Ukraine.

More in general, all nations must be wary of immediate neighbors. If Mehico were to import nukes from the CCP we’d be (justifiably) absorbing the country and getting rid of the commie trash Pres and the cartels she sold herself to.

No country is more vulnerable, than one that is defenseless or has a tiny and easily overcome military. Putin thought Ukraine was that, and now they want the same kind of military from all of Russia’s neighbors.

A strong offense is the best defense. And a strong defense is the best offense. Putin doesn’t want to hear that from other countries. Nuclear weapons are wildly successful as a strong deterrence against aggressive nations. Putin hates that from countries not named Russia.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You are perfectly right!
And let’s add that Russia ALSO put nukes in Kaliningrad WITHIN the geographical EU…

Russia is putting nukes all over the place, but it doesn’t want its opponents to do the same in self-defense!

Russia, Finland, and Europe is not Canada, the United States and Mexico and this relatively trouble free part of the world that doesn’t inflame the world in World Wars and Soviet Unions, Warsaw Pacts, nuclear war threats and Russian invasions which currently is the bloodiest European war since WWII and is starting its 5th year.

Finland and Sweden were right to seek protection against Russia’s never ending threat.

The history of WW2 is full of lessons.

But the history of WW2 is also something in the past, and conditions of that WW2 history are not applicable anymore.

Ukraine and Finland are allied now, but against a common enemy and that common enemy is also the enemy of just about all nations close by. In today’s world, Hitler’s Germany has been replaced by Russia, at least as far as Europe and the near east are concerned. China is a bigger danger, but not actively in conflict with anybody.

Speaking of being ignorant of history, your good buddy Stalin joined with Hitler in the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, whereby Russia could invade Finland. So, the actual facts of history are more complicated than you say. Russia invaded Finland (the winter war of 1939-1940). Obviously, Finland wasn’t an ally of Germany during the winter war as Germany and the Russia were allies during that time. During the second Finland-Soviet Union War (the continuation war of 1941-1944), Finland was indeed something of an ally of Germany, but never signed the tripartite pact.

During the time of the alliance of Stalin and Hitler, Russian propagandists in this country (the U.S.) promoted the America First agenda. We (the U.S.) were supposed to stay out of Europe. This propaganda changed over night when Hitler turned on Stalin.

Finland in 2013 was firmly against joining NATO.

Then it saw the 2014 Muscowite invasion of Ukraine and got worried.

The 2022 Muscowite invasion is what convinced Finland to join NATO.

If Putin hadn’t invaded, then NATO would have been weaker or even disbanded. Instead Putin made NATO stronger

There are lots of skeletons in lots of closets. This little article is a touch ironic, apperaing in the German media.

"Hundreds of Finns fought with the German Waffen-SS in Ukraine during World War II. New research shows that many of them were convinced Nazis and may have committed atrocities. The finding has triggered a debate in Finland."

Source: "If You Only Knew How Many Jews I Have Shot" Der Spiegel ( Germany ), 22 January 2025.

Used to read the rag sometimes when in Germany. It is aggressively anti-Trump, among other editorial slants.

Lots of similar skeletons in lots of different closets.

WW2 was interesting like that. Bad guys on both sides. And a lot of history. Ukraine had been invaded by the USSR and naturally saw the counter invaders as potential liberators... at least until they proved just as bad. Finland and Russia had had bad blood between them for centuries, multiple versions of governments on both sides continued the fine tradition of hating the other side, so when Germany shows up as part of invading Russia that seemed like a good idea... at least until that proved to be wrong.

Actually you’re supposed to be good allies to your neighbors. Then they won’t want to put your enemy’s nukes in their country.

Since the Russo-Finnish border is over 800 miles long, I’m not sure this move would make Finland “more vulnerable”.

Sure, ignore the example of Ukraine in 2001 giving up its last nukes. That turned out well for Ukraine.

While there are good reasons for the US to not commit to Ukraine, we should not be under any illusions that Russia, under Putin, is not an aggressive imperial power that is looking to reconstitute the Soviet Empire. It is threatening Finland. It is threatening and trying to destabilize the Baltic States and Armenia. It is threatening East European states like Poland and Moldova. The US does need to push back on Russia.
