Donald Trump has promised cheap insurance for ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz in a challenge to Lloyd’s of London.
The US president said he had ordered America’s international investment body to insure ships travelling through the Persian Gulf at a “very reasonable price” after the outbreak of fighting in the Middle East led insurers to cancel polices and dramatically raise rates.
Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Effective IMMEDIATELY, I have ordered the United States Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to provide, at a very reasonable price, political risk insurance and guarantees for the Financial Security of ALL Maritime Trade, especially Energy, travelling through the Gulf.”
The pledge is an attempt to calm international oil markets, which have been rocked by conflict in the Middle East. Investors are concerned that the war with Iran could not only disrupt oil production but also halt trade.
Around a fifth of the world’s supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, which borders Iran. The country’s Revolutionary Guard has declared the strait shut, and claimed “complete control” of the waterway on Wednesday.

I hope companies take advantage of this.
There is no cheap insurance in a theater of war.
Stupid for the Brits to throw all of that away just because they're pissed at Trump.
Lets see who gets through first, China or USA protected. That might be an indicator as to where this is going.
Freegards
The United States government should not be spending taxpayer money to provide insurance for private vessels in a war zone. There is nothing in the enumerated powers of the federal government in the Constitution permitting this activity, particularly insuring vessels not flying the U.S. flag.

The underwriters are in business to MAKE MONEY whether they like Trump or not. They’re withdrawing coverage solely because of RISK. They’re not in the business of LOSING money. Just sayin’.
Do we get cheap insurance for our cars, homes and health in this country?
Yes Trump, insurance companies LOVE government.
I’ve already seen a report on this and that outfit has limitations on what they can do and what they can insure.
I believe the exposure number I saw on that was well over $300 billion.
Not to mention, the president would like to use the navy to escort ships through the street and they would be right in the crosshairs of the Iranian missiles and shore batteries in the Navy not very interested interested in doing that either.
Even if they could get any insurance, who’s gonna crew the ship to make that trip?
Lloyd’s of London is an insurance brokerage and has a rather unique set up. They are not going to ensure those tankers in that area no matter what they’re not stupid. No matter what premium they charge of those ships goes down with an oil cargo. They’re looking at a multi million dollar payout.
The United States should do a convoy system like World War II.
Yes, I pay Zero Dollars for car insurance via self insurance option available in Florida. I cancelled home insurance 4 years ago.
Insurance is the biggest rip off of consumers.
