President Trump announced Thursday on social media that he was firing his homeland security secretary, Kristi Noem, and wanted Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma to replace her. Mr. Trump said Ms. Noem, whose tenure had been marred by a string of controversies, would move into a previously nonexistent security role.
Ms. Noem is the first cabinet member to be ousted in Mr. Trump’s second term. She faced intense questioning this week from congressional Republicans about a $220 million advertising campaign in which she figured prominently, and Mr. Trump on Thursday contradicted her testimony that he had signed off on the campaign.

The Gov. of Oklahoma, a Republican, appoints the interim Senator. As for the next election, Oklahoma is a solid GOP state.

Pretty dicey move with the midterms coming up! Mullin has to be confirmed. Nothing is SURE in politics..Can we afford to LOSE one Republican seat..at the time, it looks like we could but after November? Why did the president announce it on social media? Let the news come out slowly! That’s crazy!!
Does OK allow the governor to appoint someone to fill the vacant Senate seat? Some states don’t...

Funny thing. I agree with you. Noem always seemed more about herself, how she looked, how cool she was. Lying under oath about Trump signing off on her $200M no-bid ad campaign, which had lots of pictures of Noem, was the final straw. Senator Kennedy said POTUS Trump called him madder than a murder hornet after the senate hearing. Markwayne Mullins has impressed me as a straight shooter with MAGA motivation. I hope he can stand strong under fire.

Correction, Oklahoma is the brightest red state among all the Red states. It is the only State where every county voted for Trump.
