The captain of a ship of the Iranian Navy has handed his vessel over to the Sri Lankan government, a neutral party, for internment, saving the lives of his crew hours after another Iranian warship was destroyed nearby by the United States Navy. Sri Lanka (Ceylon) has assumed control of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ship (IRIS) Bushehr, a fleet supply ship (oiler). Sri Lanka has sent craft to receive the 1970s-era ship within its territorial waters and, per local media, has taken off 208 officers and men, who are to be sent ashore. The ship will now be taken by the Sri Lankans to Trincomalee for internment for the duration of hostilities. The Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said his government had selected the historic port of Trincomalee due to the risk of disruption to maritime traffic by the presence of the inactive warship, so they wished to keep it away from the country’s primary commercial port, Colombo. The Times of India reports Dissanayake said: “we are not taking sides in this conflict, but while maintaining our neutrality we are taking action to save lives.” Neither Sri Lanka nor Iran have yet officially confirmed that the ship was surrendered by her captain.

Does make you wonder what they were doing in Sri Lanka.
Probably wasn’t for a vacation.
I wonder if the sunk ship was planning to the same or maybe after the sinking this one reacted?
I would think that the captain, officers and crew of any Iranian navy ship/boat would want to be very far away from it.
Smart move the US boat that sunk the ship yesterday is not out of torpedos and any thing that floats bigger than a 💩can is a target.
I agree.
That little sub trick just changed everything.
We can sink your ships at will and there is nothing you can do about it.
Maybe one more for crystal clarity.

The U.S. Military should demand the ship.
They Ran Away

Surely the same things as the one that blew up. Participation in War games, I believe India was the host. Begs the question, why India?
They are ALL IRGC Members.
They were probably intending to act as an oiler and supply ship for the lone Iranian vessel that was sunk.
With its mission gone, what were their options? Couldn’t go back to Iran. They would be sunk immediately. They had to go somewhere.
Rare display of consideration for their own lives in this action. Probably have no plans to go back en bloc as a crew, but possibly individually, when the time is right.

Iran maintains two sets of militaries. Iran’s two navies are called the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy (IRIN) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) is the other. The IRIN is a conventional naval force focused on regional defense, while the IRGCN employs asymmetric tactics for maritime control, particularly in the Persian Gulf. The IRIN patrols the Gulf of Oman and Gulf of Aden.
Likewise, there’s a national army and a religious army. Like the IRIN the regular army is for outside the country and the IRGC, the religious army patrols inside the country and handles extranational terrorism.
You never know when a bunch of women might rip off their veils and start shooting.
(Good for the Captain)
Yes, wise decision
No virgins for you!
This is why I’m skeptical about China invading Taiwan. We can sink all their ships by sub, let alone aerial assault.
What are the Captain’s life expectancy and career prospects going forward?
“What are the Captain’s life expectancy and career prospects going forward?”
His life expectancy just went up - a lot.
I doubt he will be heading back to Iran anytime soon.
I am thinking they pulled most of those guys out of the ocean after the USA Navy said hello!
