France to boost nuclear arsenal and extend deterrence to European allies
BBC ^ | 03/02/2026 | Hugh Schofield

France is to boost its nuclear arsenal and extend the deterrent to cover other European countries, in a major development of its nuclear defence policy.

In a speech in Brittany, President Emmanuel Macron explained the changes as the response to an increasingly unstable strategic environment.

"The next 50 years will be an era of nuclear weapons," he said.

Speaking to naval officers in front of a nuclear submarine at the Ile Longue base near the port of Brest, he said the number of French nuclear warheads would be increased from their current level of around 300.

He announced the launch in 2036 of a new nuclear-armed submarine to be called The Invincible.

He said eight other European countries – the UK, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden and Denmark – had agreed to participate in a new "advanced deterrence" strategy.

Macron said the eight European countries could take part in exercises of France's air-launched nuclear capacity – or force de frappe - and also host air bases where France's nuclear bombers could be stationed.

This would allow France's Strategic Air Forces (FAS) to "spread out across the depth of the European continent... and thus complicate the calculations of our adversaries", the president said.

He added that France's partners would also share in the development of "auxiliary" capacities under the new nuclear doctrine: space-based alarm systems; air defence to shoot down incoming drones and missiles; and long-range missiles.

Sure, make more warheads for your jihadi masters to use on the world.

An ambitious goal. But France is already becoming Islamic.

Look at what happened to South Africa. I suspect it'll be similar in France.

Four of seven ships named “HMS Invincible” sank.

Pick another name.

Macron reserves the right to make all decisions on the use of French weaponry. Poland should build an arsenal.

As frequently predicted in this forum, we are witnessing the initial stages of nuclear proliferation so unnecessarily caused by this administration's gratuitous belligerence toward NATO.

I think we should not be belligerent toward NATO, we should just disband it. We don’t need it anymore and we can then pick and choose which countries with which to be friendly. Yes to England-No to Turkey for example. Russia and the Warsaw Pact are no longer the threat they used to be.

We've got the missiles, peace to determine
And one of the fingers on the button will be German

Inevitable as the day. Point the first: Brexit left France as the only nuclear weapon power in the EU; point the second: the UK leases their nukes...from us. Brussels has concluded it's cheaper than paying for an army they can't raise anyway.

Someone needs to tell Macron that Napoleon purposefully sold us Louisiana on the cheap in order to make us a world superpower !!!!

This accession of territory strengthens forever the power of the United States, and I have just given to England a maritime rival that will sooner or later humble her pride. - Napoleon Bonaparte

No to Turkey Note that Turkey is not among the combination of nations that we have driven to participate in this proliferation of nuclear bombs. How long do you think Turkey will stand isolated and alone and naked in a nuclear neighborhood?

Once Turkey gets the bomb, the whole of the Mideast will too.

The NATO you want to abolish assured that it was the United States that predominantly controlled the nuclear weapons of Europe. Now we have excited a brand-new nuclear arms race among all of these nations, some of whom might well turn Muslim, one of which already is Muslim.

It is the misguided policy of the Trump administration that has brought us to this dangerous pass. We have predicted it time and again in this forum but, sadly, we shall now see the folly of our arrogance.

What did you think would happen when President Trump told his NATO allies that he might not defend them in the event of nuclear attack? What did you think would happen when this threat was made in the context of the speech by JD Vance in Munich?

What did you think would happen when Donald Trump threatened to invade Greenland to gain base rights there that he already possessed? What did you think would happen when the nations of NATO saw the president siding with Russia against Ukraine?

These are not left-wing DU spasms, these are conservative cautions made time and again in this forum, exactly predicting this would occur.

This administration has just incited nuclear arms proliferation, yet the theme of this thread is to make cheap and easy fun of European nations and to resort to silly references to DU. We could put our time to better service by contemplating our folly.

It’s quite possible that President Trump wants more countries to acquire nuclear weapons, as a means to deter aggression by others.

And realistically speaking, there’s little the US can do to prevent other nations to acquire nuclear weapons, other than Iran, etc.

Would not be surprised if Germany develops nukes.
