House passes bill to protect home appliances from efficiency regulations
Washington Examiner ^ | February 24th 2026 | Maydeen Merino

The House of Representatives passed a bill that would limit the Department of Energy’s authority to set energy conservation standards for household appliances, a measure Republicans argue would prevent the agency from imposing unrealistic standards that raise costs for families.

The House voted 217-190 on Tuesday to pass a bill written by Rep. Rick Allen (R-GA) that would amend the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, which requires the DOE to set minimum efficiency standards for consumer appliances and commercial equipment.

The bill would “prevent future administrations from prioritizing a radical rush-to-green agenda over the affordability and availability of reliable household appliances that Americans rely on every day,” Allen said in December.

The bill, the Home Appliance Protection and Affordability Act, is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration and Republicans to repeal or reduce energy efficiency standards, which they argue would lower consumer costs and regulatory burdens for businesses.

Specifically, the bill would terminate the requirement that the DOE periodically update energy conservation standards and allow the agency to amend those standards as needed.

Republicans said the resolution would prevent unrealistic and stringent regulations on gas stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washers, and air conditioners — like those implemented by the Biden administration.

Congress used to legislate matters of national importance.

That was long ago.

Stay the 'F away from my lightbulbs, refrigerator, HVAC, water heater, stove, toilet, oven etc.

Autos too.

I like this bill. It tells the executive branch to stay out of our appliance decisions.

And I'm someone who a few years ago went hog wild on replacing my HVAC with a variable speed heat pump, and replacing my water heater with a hybrid water heater. In other words, I dig energy efficiency but think it should be a free market decision.

By the way, the energy star rating is a bunch of crap. Do your homework to make sure your appliances are efficient (if it matters to you).

We paid over $3,500 for a mid-range GE refrigerator five years ago.

While the freezer portion still works, the refrigerator portion stopped working a month ago.

The GE authorized repair guy replaced various parts to no avail.

Maybe next week a tech from GE will be out to replace major parts.

Thank goodness for my 35 year old beer fridge in the garage that survived, while on our porch, Hurricane Michael.

Yep. It’s crazy that Congress even has to consider such a thing. Then again, I read that the EU was debating on what kind of teapots should be permitted.

I suppose we’re headed in that exact same direction.
🙁

I was at lowes and Home depot over the weekend and have been looking at frige/freezer combo units. All of them were made in mexico, china, thailand, or some other obscure land. I live in Michigan, home to Whirlpool Corporation. Nothing is made in America and it is a shame.

Why not just abolish this worthless, unconstitutional agency?

There’s nothing worse than these high efficiency appliances. Dish washers and washing machines that take hours to do their job and still do a crappy job.

I bought a new Sears fridge about 30 years ago. Never touched it. Last year it finally gave it up. Bought a new GE. I couldn’t get the ice maker or water to work. For the first time in many years I had to “call the guy”. He tested it and said the circuit boards were bad. Say what??? It’s brand new. So he ordered the boards and came by a week later to put them in. JUNK!!!!

You’re right. I live in a rust-belt state. And I watch the local real estate listings, just because.

A big city near me is turning abandoned factories into apartment buildings. The apartments rent at $1500 a month, plus. I just don’t get it. The jobs are all gone. Yet the apartments are full.

Maybe I’m missing something here. But as I see it, something’s got to give.

The whole purpose of these regulations is to effectively subsidize the appliance manufacturers by mandating more expensive and less reliable crap that needs to be repaired/replaced more frequently.

So, none of the Whirlpool/Maytag/Kitchen Aid/Amana appliances are made in Iowa anymore?

My last two french door fridges were made by that corporation in Iowa.
The first one I left at the previous house said Amana on the outside and Whirlpool on the inside.

The one in my kitchen right now I bought at Sears. It says Kenmore on the outside and Maytag on the inside.

Another friend has the same fridge. Except it says Kitchen Aid on the outside and Maytag.

The local appliance dealer said that they are all made by Whirlpool in the same factory in Iowa. They just stick different names on them based on the trim levels. With Kitchen Aid being the most expensive.

When I bought the last one Sears was still around. I could have bought the same fridge from the local guy as a Whirlpool. but it would have been $400 more.

And the EPA, and every other unconstitutional federal agency. This would immediately balance the budget and reduce federal payrolls by half.

We have a 33 year old Sears upright freezer in our garage. It out lived a frost free version we bought 10 years ago as a backup and more space. We recently defrosted the upright, but my wife unplugged the wrong cord so it sat there with door open all day. I thought for sure it wasn’t going to work once got it sorted out. It’s still running like a champ. Only thing I ever had to replace on it was the door seal many years ago.

We exchange worthless paper for physical goods made by others in the world. Then we “print” more worthless paper to juice the system so there are enough avenues for people to “earn” enough to pay rent. It all keeps working until the faith in the worthless paper collapses.

Funny you should mention that. I was doing a bit of house cleaning the other day. My old refrigerator is showing signs of rust. As is my old stove. Same with my washer and my dryer.

All are old. 25 years, plus. All are American-made. And most importantly, all are working just like the day I bought them.

Yay, American rust!
