The crowded race to succeed California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, which has no clear front-runner in the Democratic ranks, has likely just been made tougher by the party’s failure this weekend to endorse a candidate.
Hundreds of delegates and party members gathered for the California Democratic Party convention at the Moscone Center in San Francisco over the weekend, ahead of the crucial June 2 statewide primary election. Among them were nine eligible candidates hoping to run for the state’s governor this year with the backing of the party.
These included former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, former State Controller Betty Yee, Representative Eric Swalwell, former Representative Katie Porter, former Assemblyman Ian Calderon, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, and businessman Tom Steyer.
Newsom’s second term as California governor ends this year, and it is not yet clear whether the high-profile Democrat and Trump critic will run for the nation’s top job in the next presidential election. Last year, he told reporters that he would make this decision after the midterms.
But the midterms are shaping up to be a complicated affair in California as Newsom leaves the stage and the race to replace him continues, with no clear frontrunner. …

LOL. Weak field. But this really is a verdict on alleged “front-runner” Katie Porter. She is thoroughly loathsome and not even hardcore Democrats like her.
What a foul stew that group is.
Slurp it up CA !
Katie Porter looks like someone that would really smell bad. She doesn’t look like someone that would practice good hygiene.
Swalwell will be the nominee, and will win by a huge margin. This is California.
The Party picks the winner anyway so why bother endorsing anyone.
Elections in California are a sham.
Currently Steve Hilton is leading all candidates, both GOP and Dem. Not by a lot but he’s in No. 1 poll position.
“Swalwell will be the nominee, and will win by a huge margin. This is California.”
Without a doubt.
The only way a Republican could possibly win in November is if TWO of them finish on top in the jungle primary which is coming up soon. There’s about a 1% chance of that happening (rounding up) and Bianco is basically a Democrat anyway, though by CA standards a “conservative” (LOL) one. He sure sounds good on TV though.
Even if the GOP gets both November slots.... write-ins are not allowed in general elections by state law, but since when have Democrats been known to obey laws?
“The only way a Republican could possibly win in November is if TWO of them finish on top in the jungle primary which is coming up soon.”
Even IF that occurred Dims would run somebody as an independent...with a Billion dollar campaign.
law states top two, regardless of party are on ballot.
They’ll go with Woke Salad Kammi.
There are no “nominees” in California anymore. The top two vote getters in the primary move on to the general election. Some polls at the moment indicate that both candidates would be Republicans because the Democrats are so fractured. The Democrats have months to correct that issue, though, and coalesce around a candidate or two.
Not possible - California is the top two candidates. So "even if that occurred", that's it...there's no "independent", or anything else candidate, that can run. If an independent candidate is to be on ballot, they would have to be one of the top two finishers in the primary.
