Poland's withdrawal from landmine ban convention threatens escalation — Russian MFA

"Beyond weakening the Convention itself, these steps could set off a domino effect, with other countries following suit," Maria Zakharova said

MOSCOW, February 20. /TASS/. Warsaw's withdrawal from the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention could trigger a "domino effect" and escalate tensions in Europe, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a comment.

"The consequences of such actions will soon become apparent. Beyond weakening the Convention itself, these steps could set off a domino effect, with other countries following suit," the diplomat said. "At the same time, some EU member states with developed military and industrial capabilities are already seeking to profit from rising international demand for anti-personnel mines," she added.

"All these factors inevitably contribute to further escalation in Europe and to a deterioration of regional and international security," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman concluded.

Deterioration of security? I would think landmines and the like would have the exact opposite effect.

Minefields on your own nations soil seems pretty passive.

Tell Russia to plant their own mines. Then they’ll be even.

Problem is that people lose track of them over time.

In France and Belgium people are still injured from land mines left over after WWI.

That is a good point, Russia can feel free to have their own within their borders.

A "Convention" to which Russia is not a party.

IOW, pure equine feces.

Remember the neutron bomb? It was defensive. Soviet tanks were quite numerous and the bomb was the easiest way to take them all out. Unfortunately Jimmy Carter gave it away hoping Brezhnev was ‘reasonable’. Got nothing in return.

Would Ukraine have used it if they had that bomb? What if they planted those mines beforehand? Set a trap.

Past and recent history shows us its better to lose track of a few landmines than have Moscovy arrive in your town, destroy it and murder your family. Naturally, Kremlin Bolsheviks oppose any defense against their revanchist empire building.

For the record, neither the United States nor Russia have ever been party to this treaty.

All’s Fair In Love and War.

If your home is threatened you do whatever it takes, that include landmines.

WWI was a desperately fluid mess over scattered battlefields of more than a 100 years ago with primitive and permanent mines.

I don’t think Poland will have problems with tightly designated peacetime surveyed and precisely positioned minefields and advanced mine technology.

In World War II, a Russian general had troops storm across mine fields as he believed the loss would be no greater than soldiers shot advancing on an enemy.

It’s proof the war pigs in Poland the EU are desperate to start a war with Russia despite the fact that most people there don’t want one.

Russia now complaining about “escalation”?

LOL!!!

How about illegally invading a sovereign country just to steal their land?

Then deliberately targeting and killing innocent civilians, in violation of the Geneva Convention, which that country freely signed??

Wouldn’t those be “escalations”??

The Russians have no reason to complain about landmines in Poland unless....

Explain how mining your own land is proof of wanting to start a war? Of course a Pootie-Poot sycophant may disagree since falling prostrate before the mighty Rus Viking is the only way to show your peaceful intent.

How about illegally invading a sovereign country just to steal their land?

And their grain, power, money, furniture, art, jewelry, and children.

Don’t bother with this clown - he is a shill for the Kremlin and its murderous thug leader. He’s not worth the trouble.

Poland using its military to defend its national border against imperialist invasion is about as nationalist and conservative as it gets.

Yet still we see once again the decades may change but Moscow’s fellow travellers and useful fools never change. They can’t help but reflexively parrot whatever pablum is spoon fed them by the Kremlin.
