The U.S. military is preparing for the possibility of sustained, weeks-long operations against Iran if President Donald Trump orders an attack, two U.S. officials told Reuters, in what could become a far more serious conflict than previously seen between the countries.
The disclosure by the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the planning, raises the stakes for the diplomacy underway between the United States and Iran.
U.S. and Iranian diplomats held talks in Oman last week in an effort to revive diplomacy over Tehran's nuclear program, after Trump amassed military forces in the region, raising fears of new military action.
U.S. officials said on Friday the Pentagon was sending an additional aircraft carrier to the Middle East, adding thousands more troops along with fighter aircraft, guided-missile destroyers and other firepower capable of waging attacks and defending against them.
Trump, speaking to U.S. troops on Friday at a base in North Carolina, said it had "been difficult to make a deal" with Iran.
"Sometimes you have to have fear. That's the only thing that really will get the situation taken care of," Trump said.

*** Iran's Revolutionary Guards have warned that in case of strikes on Iranian territory, they could retaliate against any U.S. military base.
The U.S. maintains bases throughout the Middle East, including in Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Trump for talks in Washington on Wednesday, saying that if an agreement with Iran were reached, "it must include the elements that are vital to Israel."***

Whatever happened to "Loose Lips Sink Ships"?
Desert Storm involved 6 carriers. 3000 sorties a day for about a month. 2 carriers aren’t much.

How long does it take for the USS Ford Carrier Strike Group
in the Caribbean to make it to the waters near Iran?
About a week.
They don’t see to have revealed more than what is publicly visible already. More like signaling to the Iranians.
Weapons, command/control and intelligence are better today.

That was 35 years ago. Modern missiles and bombs are significantly more powerful and vastly more accurate than the ordnance used during the 1991 Gulf War (Desert Storm).
More like signaling to the Iranians.
If war is to be avoided the Iranians must understand that it's coming hard if they don't make a deal

Two carriers are a lot really. Technology has changed a lot since the 1990’s.

The operation would involve more than 2 carriers.
But those two CBG would carry 40 F-35s, 50 FA-18s...and ordnance/fuel for at least 30 days.
Then there are the heavy bombers...B-52 and B-1b from wherever. The B-1b can deliver 70,000 lbs per sortie, the b-52 only 58,000lbs.
There would be a bunch of legacy AF fighters doing the precision work after stealth takes out all ability to resist.
Every single shot will have twice the certainty of hitting dead center compared to yesteryear.
Did I mention 300 or so Tomahawks from the Destroyers in the battle group? And if there is a SSGN in the group (likely) that’s another 154 Tomahawks.
I know I wouldn’t want those guys after me, but hey...sounds like you would not fear it.

If the US engages Iran, it will be short and sweet. President Trump knows better than to get bogged down in fiascos.
How many recall that during the Gulf War we had Iowa class BBs (I forget which one(s)) in theater supporting the bluff of an amphibious invasion of Kuwaiti coast. We also had B52s do some real carpet bombing with non-smart bombs. I recall a post war review showing 16" shells and carpet bombing to be the only weapons which were cost effective without precision. Both scared the cr*p out of any Iraqis in the area they failed to kill.
