Portland’s economy is not working for the majority of residents and businesses.
Housing is too expensive. Companies are shrinking their presence in the city. Job numbers are going down. And the city’s most promising indicator of growth can’t be relied upon in today’s political climate: international in-migration.
Those are some of the findings from ECOnorthwest, a research and consulting firm headquartered in Portland. The city’s business advocacy group, Portland Metro Chamber, partners each year with the firm to research and analyze economic indicators in the region.
In the latest report released Thursday, economists at ECOnorthwest looked at population, housing affordability and jobs to gauge the health of Portland’s economy.
They found that in 2025, those indicators showed an economy nearing a crisis.
The region has shed nearly 9,000 jobs in the last year, the fourth worst for metro regions in the country. Births still outpace deaths in the region, but that number is getting smaller. Fewer permits are being issued for new multifamily homes.

I have a friend who was offered a job in Portland and, despite a 40% salary increase, he said no. He said he didn’t want to expose his kids to that kind of political environment and feared the city is being taken over by Leftist groups, like ANTIFA.
Only woke commies want to live there.

They’re listening to the same experts that are making money on the homeless crisis. The main problem is Portland is encouraging homelessness. Stop giving them money and free housing. Arrest people for drug use and vagrancy. Then you’ll quickly see the problem start disappearing.

Portland Oregon has been in a death spiral since the shipping port closed more than a decade ago, because the current generation of large ships cannot navigate the 100 miles of the Columbia River from the Pacific Ocean.
Cause of Portland’s demise is because the dems are defrauding the gov’t out of funds to support their own party.
I once knew Portland OR as a nice place with good and friendly people.
Now it’s an ANTIFA-infested city that has half-succeeded from the USA. What happened?

Sounds similar to my experience. Was offered a good paying job - at least on paper until taxes and cost of living were baked in - in Los Angeles. I said no way.
