An Army veteran from Covington, Georgia, who has lived in the U.S. for more than 50 years faces imminent deportation.
Godfrey Wade, a Jamaican-born veteran, has been in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody for nearly five months. His attorney says an emergency stay of removal was denied, but an appeal is pending.
Loved ones said Wade's years of military service should count for something. He's been missing from the home he shares with fiancée April Watkins, who said, "We've built an amazing life together, and to be separated from that is very challenging, especially since he did not have an opportunity to have his voice heard."
Wade is also absent from the lives of his six children and three grandchildren.
"It's been an emotional roller coaster," said his daughter, Christian Wade, who described her own daughter crying at night for her grandfather.

Wade's path to deportation began on Sept. 13, 2025, when he was pulled over for failing to use a turn signal in Conyers. He was arrested for driving without a license. Soon after, ICE detained him due to a 2014 removal order stemming from a 2007 bounced check and a 2006 simple assault charge.

We could consider new legislation.
For the next guy.
For you, adios!
He’s had 50 years to become a citizen? Sounds to me like he’s the one who lacks appreciation.
A bounced check and an assault charge and a previous order to leave which he has been evading.
Interesting. When I was in the Navy, it was my understanding that Filipinos were given citizenship after serving 4 years. If that was the case, not sure why it wouldn’t apply here?
Driving without a license, bounced checks, assault...adios!
Yep, and driving without a license. Not exactly a rule follower. He should enjoy Jamaica.
50 years.
He had a path to US Citizenship and failed to take it, sucks to be him. No sympathy from me, US Army Retired.
One needs to keep reading till it says there was an order since 2014 which was based on a bad check in 2007 and assault charge in 2006. Details details.
Citizenship isn’t given to non-citizens for military service. A pathway (usually expedited) is created through military service. There is no “serve four years, get citizenship” process.
They must get a green card to first enlist, then apply for citizenship and meet all requirements of the law.
Commits a bunch of crimes, never in 50 years seeks citizenship, but then complains when he gets deported.
So typical, driving w/o a lisence isn’t mentioned until the bottom of the article. How many other laws did he break??? He made stupid choices and put his family at risk by doing so.
Once he got himself a criminal record, his path at citizenship was closed.
He effed up long ago.
Bad life choices should hurt.
This is an irresponsible person. America does not need more of these. We have too many.
Jesse James had a lot of friends and supporters but he was a bank and train robber.
A bounced check and an assault charge and a previous order to leave which he has been evading.
FWIW, a change in court date was sent to Randy Weaver, indicating April instead of March, resulted in the Ruby Ridge standoff when he failed to appear at the March hearing.
Mistakes are made by the govt and unfortunately citizens are the ones held accountable.
I'd give the guy clemency for the sole fact that he was a veteran of the US military.
Exactly.
