Yep. The loss of refining capacity was mentioned in an OpEd that the New York Times (of all people) just ran, titled Will Newsom Be the Democrats Next Mistake?
The NYT OpEd lists several issues:

• Affordability - Cost of living in Cali is sky-high.
• Poverty - 1 in 6 Californians live in poverty, while Cali also has an upper class of high net worth individuals (Tech guys, etc).
• Homelessness - California accounts for 44% of homelessness in the nation.
• Flight - "Between April 2020 and July 2025, California had a total net loss of almost 1.3 million people who moved to other states."
• K-12 education - "...reading comprehension has remained flat while math skills have dropped."
• Energy Costs - gas is much more expensive, and they are losing refiners (Valero, as you mentioned).
• Crime - Prop 47 reclassified shoplifting under $950 from a felony to a misdemeanor. We saw how that worked out.
• Wokeness - Newsom signed SB132. 'Nuff said.

That this appeared in the NEW YORK TIMES is really something...
