The former first couple have been trying to reach an agreement with the Oversight Committee to avoid a vote to hold them both in contempt of Congress.
WASHINGTON — Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are in a standoff with House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., over testimony the panel is seeking in its investigation into the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The dispute is over the format of the Clintons' testimony to lawmakers. The Clintons' legal team wrote a letter to Comer on Tuesday offering their public testimony before the committee at two hearings this month, according to parts of the letter shared with NBC News.
The former secretary of state offered to testify before the panel on Feb. 26, and the former president offered to testify on Feb. 27, according to the letter. A Clinton spokesman and House Oversight Committee ranking member Robert Garcia, D-Calif., confirmed the dates. While the letter said they would be available for depositions on those dates, it made it clear that they would prefer to testify in an open hearing.
“Though you have notably never asked the Clintons to appear in an open hearing, we now believe that will best suit our concerns about fairness," the letter said. "Their answers, and your questions, can be seen by all to be judged accordingly."
After the Clintons told Comer they would testify publicly, however, he announced in a statement Tuesday that the two had agreed to appear for transcribed, recorded depositions this month. Depositions are conducted behind closed doors.
"We look forward to questioning the Clintons as part of our investigation into the horrific crimes of Epstein and Maxwell, to deliver transparency and accountability for the American people and for survivors,” Comer said Tuesday. "Maxwell" is Epstein's co-conspirator,...
They don't recall how to say "I don't recall?"
The Clintons will run circles around Republicans. It might be best for Republicans to drag this out. Makes the Clintons look guilty.
“I was baking cookies for my daughter.”
So, what was hitlery doing in Saudi Arabia with a personal audience with Bin Salman the titular head of the House of Saud? This was just after this b30tch skipped her appointed House testimony and of course so did Billy Cokenose.
What was she doing there— in front of the supposedly horrible murdering Sheik, who removed Talwaleed from all the House of Saud money and influence (which, at the time of 9/11 included getting the visas for the 9/11 Saudis who took part, and aided in this by scum Brennan. These are facts).
The Clintons are a criminal operation— international. They sold US uranium rights to a company later sold to Russia through their middle man, Canadian Giusti (who also sat on the Clinton Foundation in Canada and thus handled the deposit for the skim on the sale where US oversight could not be made.)
These are greasy crummy people. They are not liked whatsoever by decent Americans, and now they try to manipulate Comer and this committee into a public testimony delayed from their skipped one by some 2 weeks, to prevent a vote surely to put them in Contempt of Congress— and being referred to DOJ for prosecution. Just like Navarro and Bannon were jailed for not responding to Congress subpoena.
They should not be allowed to play with people. This should be shaming them permanently. And— both of them were on Epstein Island, Hitlary was there with her gal pal Huma Abedin— and little girls. Seriously.
These traitors had their chance. Now hold them in total contempt and have them arrested and perpwalked to jail.
That about sums it up. I am sure the Clinton’s will raise “I don’t recall,” to an art form.
Just jail them already.
Amazing how they seem to think they can dictate the terms of their depositions . . .
It depends on the what the definition of “Sex” is.
Didn’t the Ceausescu’s act the same way right to the very end?
IIRC, they’ve done that forever. And the folks who wanted them to appear have always allowed it.
Having the Clintons under oath in a public forum having NO IDEA what the questions might be sounds like a dream come true.
But the swamp congress is cowardly and lazy.
Instead of appreciating the opportunity and taking it as a challenge, they want the prep behind closed doors.
Taking a deposition in private gives both sides a chance to prep and let their lawyers and staff do the hard work.
It takes the high wire risk away and the hearings become nothing more the Kabuki theater with gasbag politicians taking poses hoping to make political hay back home.
Why do the Clintons want to go straight to public testimony?
I’m not sure they do but they know the Republicans are cowardly and lazy and want their staff to research and prepare the questions for open session.
But it makes the Republicans look like they don’t want to be transparent and it gives the left wing media a talking point.
I may be cynical but I’ve seen this movie before.
I haven’t seen much ever come out of congressional hearings lately.
Although Elise Stefanik did make mince meat of those college presidents and it ended up costing the Harvard witch her job.
Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon both served four months for defying congressional subpoenas.
But they aren’t Democrats.
As I suggested yesterday, the only reason the Clintons decided to appear was that they came up with a way to falsely implicate President Trump with no provable evidence to dispute it.
The fact that they want an open hearing proves my hunch. Their ploys have no effect in a closed session if the LAAP-dog media can't report on it.

> Why do the Clintons want to go straight to public testimony?<
These televised hearings are a joke. The questioners will be limited by time.
The deMS-13s will take their entire time preaching the platitudes of the morally superior Clintons and honing their TDS.
The gopers will waste half their time reviewing the evilness of Epstein and waste the other half asking questions that will not be answered.
The whole thing, at some point, devolves into a shouting match.
Every Congressman covets face time during a very highly publicized hearing during an election year.
EC
Bring it on, but of course it'll just be "I don't recall" over and over again.
Well, that's nice - but it's not one of the powers of Congress.
Congress (thank God) is not a law enforcement body. Law enforcement bodies "deliver accountability". Dog and pony shows don't.
The only reason they want open hearings is because questioning is limited to five minutes for each Congressman. Depositions behind closed doors allow for prolonged questioning to force answers the Clintons don’t want to give.
Depositions behind closed doors wouldn’t be a dog and pony show.
