Taiwan will use a range of joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance methods, as well as intelligence-sharing, to "grasp" China's possible intentions, says its defence minister.

Taiwan is monitoring what it called "abnormal" changes to China's military leadership after its most senior general was put under investigation, and will not lower its guard as the threat level remains high, the defence minister said on Monday (Jan 26).

China announced on Saturday that Zhang Youxia, second-in-command under President Xi Jinping as vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, and another senior officer, Liu Zhenli, were under investigation for suspected serious violations of discipline and law.

"We will continue to closely monitor abnormal changes among the top levels of China's party, government, and military leadership. The military's position is based on the fact that China has never abandoned the use of force against Taiwan," Taiwan Defence Minister Wellington Koo told reporters at parliament.

Could very well be China is in the process of purging it’s military ranks of spies and divisive elements in preparation for war.

There was a post here that claimed the top general organized a coup and had 100 troops try and arrest Xi. Xi got word in advance and countered with enough men to defeat the insurrection. With Communist countries you never know if stories like this are true or not .

Zhang Youxia is reputedly opposing an invasion of Taiwan due to likely catastrophic costs to China, esp. it’s military. Purportedly, he prefers the PLA concentrate on DEFENDING China instead of going on offense and getting into a war with the US - sort of a policy of accommodation? Or, perhaps, being more a porcupine than a wolf?

Regardless, if Xi is getting crankier as he gets older, that’s not a good thing for anyone...

Doubtful. Stalin did that and nearly lost a war because Soviet leadership had been gutted.

Another take on this is that he could be purging a bunch of "yes" men.

They may have blown a lot of smoke about the capabilities of the Chinese military systems the world is being told to fear. Their hardware did poorly in Iran and later Venezuela. Xi lost a lot of face there.

The two most purged generals were generals who opposed the invasion of tiawan.

However those general also purged all of X’s generals.

So now China has lost all of its top generals.

For now they cannot wage a war even if they wanted to.

Xi has another problem. The general he just killed was the one that enabled him to get a third term. This makes about the 5th time that someone got too close X and then wound up dead.

CCP members notice. so now they do not want to be seen as too close to Xi. they do not obey orders. at this rate X will soon be out. He is a pariah.
