A 33-year-old hiker was rescued on Jan. 17 after attempting to traverse four peaks in New York's Catskill Mountains
A passing forest ranger had warned the person about their plans before the hiker sent out an SOS call
"The hiker was confident in their ability, had the proper gear, and proceeded," officials said
A 33-year-old hiker experienced hypothermia and was rescued after attempting to climb four peaks in New York’s Catskill Mountains. A forest ranger had warned the person about their hiking plans when they first set out, officials said.
The ill-fated expedition began on the afternoon of Friday, Jan. 16, when the unnamed citizen began a hike of Table Mountain, a 3,847-foot peak in Ulster County, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.
At 1:30 p.m. local time, Forest Ranger Jeffery was on a routine patrol on the Phoenicia East Branch Trail when he came across the hiker.
“Ranger Jeffery expressed concern over the late start,” officials said, “but the hiker was confident in their ability, had the proper gear, and proceeded.”
More than 12 hours later, at 2:27 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, the hiker sent an SOS signal from a satellite device that directed first responders to Fisherman’s Path, authorities said.
“It’s a common trailless exit route for many of the Catskill peaks,” the agency added.
The roads were icy, which delayed the response of the rangers. Four hours later, at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, two rangers — including Jeffery — found the 33-year-old hiker, who had fallen into a river. By that time, the person “was visibly suffering from rapidly progressing hypothermia,” according to officials.

A $5,000 (at least) rescue fee is in order.

Stupid is as stupid does.
Hypothermia is kind and gentle as it kills you. You just go to sleep and die.
When I worked in the North Sea we had instructions on how to survive if our rig went down. The instructions were simple, get to the life rafts and boats as quick as possible and don your survival suits and life jackets. You might live.
That cold water will kill you in just a few minutes as it did my friends on the Alexander Kielland disaster in Norway North Sea Sector March 27, 1980. I was on it a few weeks before it went down with 113 men a few of which I knew.
When the Kielland went down it was due to structural failure and all the training meant nothing. A leg failed and the quarters ship simple fell over with not warning. Some survived but few.
I miss my friends, survivors guilt is real but faded now.
It was a dark and stormy night
Hugs to you. I was in a pretty big storm off the coast of Nova Scotia and thought our ship would go down. I was prepared for the few minutes it would take if we did sink.

You’re right. It’s on the risk-taker. But I do wonder whether bc the person is meticulously unnamed and personal pronoun plural might be a woman, not a him. BC if it were a guy, we’d sure as hell know it was another foolish guy. Yeah, I’m a cynic. Prove me wrong. Gimme the name and gender.
Sex, not gender. Thank you.
LOL!!!!
You have a point
Saw that too. Can’t stand bad grammar which is so prevalent in so many articles these days.
