Travelers will need to have a REAL ID to board their next US domestic flight or face a $45 fee from the Transportation Security Administration beginning on February 1.
Last year, TSA started enforcement of its REAL ID requirement. Several months later, it proposed charging a fee to travelers who haven’t obtained a REAL ID.
Now, TSA is rolling out ConfirmID, a process to streamline the identification check and fee payment for those without a REAL ID. Travelers without a REAL ID can input their information online and pay the fee, set at $45, before heading to the airport to streamline a potentially lengthy compliance process.
The REAL ID Act, which was passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the federal government enhance security standards for identification.
CNN sat down with Steve Lorincz, deputy executive assistant administrator of TSA to discuss what changes travelers might see beginning in February.
Here’s some of what he had to say, along with some additional details about the new policy. What happens on February 1?
“February 1 is really the next phase of REAL ID compliance enforcement. We rolled out REAL ID in May of 2025. About 94% of the population, or the passengers that transit through a TSA checkpoint today, have a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or an acceptable form of ID, like a passport. So that leaves us about 6%,” Lorincz said.
That 6% has a couple of options now. Of course, those travelers can go to the Department of Motor Vehicles, or wherever their state issues IDs, and obtain a REAL ID. But for those travelers who haven’t done that by February 1, TSA ConfirmID is an online system where they can enter their name and travel start date and pay a $45 fee.

I’ll just use my passport, thank you very much.
I feel so safe now.

I’m not wasting my time and money on a Real ID driver’s license. I have a military ID that works just fine when flying. I also have a passport, passport card and Global Entry card. I’m good.
Do illegal aliens have to comply as well?
omg.
Other than incrase the sale of finger nail clippers and pocket knives, these arseholes have really served no useful purpose except to give granny a thrill...spit.
“I’m not wasting my time and money on a Real ID driver’s license. “
You don’t drive?
RealID is another money-grab masquerading as a security improvement. Total theater with the intention of documenting the movements of the plebes. A passport works fine.
The origin of RealID was from the 9/11 attack, which we will commemorate the 25th anniversary this year. (Ironically, the RealID would have done nothing on 9/11 because all the terrorists had passports and visas). OK, it can be a little tricky for people without passports and with name changes to gather all the forms, but it has been many, many years and many postponements. Does anything work slower and less competently that government?
The left says that black people don’t know how or can’t obtain any ID at all, of any kind, although they are passionate enough about politics and government that they register and vote in elections, will the left explode with how racist this flying rule is?
It is about to be even more wild at Spirit Airlines.
When I got mine, Ohio was going though a “reidentify everyone” program for some reason, so renewing a license required more than just the old license and an eye test. The difference between a regular license and a RealID was one extra bill addressed to me since I already had a passport and previous licence.
I have used my passport card a couple times on domestic flights to ‘test the system’. The TSA critter didn’t even blink ...
For reasons 100% unknown to me, the US Passport card is not valid for flying, despite being a “real ID”.
Or so claimed a lady at the TSA.
Unless you’re an illegal alien. Then you just sail right through security with a piece of paper.
WTF???
The only thing worse than a pig-ignorant cop is a pig-ignorant TSA drone.
Here in Californis REAL ID is a must if one wants to buy ammo or a gun.
If there is a chance of airport violence I’ll just send my fragile grandmother on the elegant and refined Carnival Cruise line to her destination instead.
:-)
I’m just going to keep doing that - why have ANOTHER thing to keep up with?
