Newsom slams Trump in Switzerland

California's Gov. Gavin Newsom slammed President Trump in Davos, Switzerland, and Trump slammed back. Sonoma State political science professor David McCuan dissects.

Transcript Summary

California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that a planned speaking event (a simple conversation/discussion) at the USA House in Davos, Switzerland, during the World Economic Forum was canceled following President Trump's speech. Newsom attributed the cancellation to actions ensuring he could not speak, amid his criticisms of Trump and calls for world leaders to stand up to him.

Newsom spoke the next morning at the forum, where he accused the Trump administration of intimidation and denying rights, and highlighted the need to point out absurdities in European leaders' approaches.

The White House responded by calling Newsom a third-rate governor who was frolicking in Switzerland instead of addressing California's problems.

Political science professor David McEwen described Newsom's actions as strategic, aimed at positioning for a potential 2028 presidential run. He noted that the controversy enhances Newsom's stature, allows him to appear as a Democratic counter to Trump, and leverages his international engagements (including meetings with leaders like Xi Jinping) and California's economic size. McEwen viewed Newsom's framing of the cancellation as turning it into an advantage, portraying himself as a C-suite leader with unique global access compared to other Democrats.

Separately, President Trump launched a "Board of Peace" at Davos via a signing ceremony, focused on overseeing Gaza reconstruction and resolving other global conflicts. It featured leaders mainly from the Middle East and South America (including Saudi Arabia and Argentina). Over 50 countries were invited, with about 35 agreeing to participate so far, and plans to work with the United Nations. Permanent members are required to contribute $1 billion in the first year. Some countries (France, Sweden, Norway) rejected participation, and the EU has not committed. Critics expressed concerns it could replace the United Nations.

On other matters at Davos, indications emerged that a U.S. invasion of Greenland is off the table, and Trump appeared to de-escalate tariff threats against Europe. After his speech and discussions (including with NATO leaders), the Greenland issue was described as no longer arising in conversations. Focus shifted to Arctic protection amid Chinese and Russian activity. Trump stated a new deal with Greenland is on the horizon, potentially allowing additional U.S. military facilities.

We used to have what they called “the loyal opposition”.

We used to say “Politics stops at the water’s edge”.

Now the Democrats go overseas and try to sabotage the popularly elected US President in hopes of damaging his entire economic and foreign policy.

Like I said, Newscum has been a mouse in Trump’s claws.
Newscum tries to wriggle away and Trump pounces on him.

Just waiting for Newscum to have a few problems with Customs on the way back in. Time for multiple body cavity searches and a return flight to Switzerland as his reentry is rejected. Well, I can dream, can’t I?

How is this not a Logan Act violation?

Newsom was clearly there to undermine President Trump's foreign policy actions with foreign dignitaries.

Newsom had no United States business being there, except to block any advances that President Trump might have made with European leaders.

“..How is this not a Logan Act violation?...”

If we had a bulldog of an AG, instead of some teenie-booper Jeff Sessions in Heels, that’s exactly what should happen. Make the process the punishment...just like the communists do to ours....drag it out all all the gory details all thru the media outlets...make it verrrry expensive even if the commie SOB gets off.

Gov. Gavin can stay in Switzerland. We are making it just fine here in California, even without his ‘guidance’.

“How is this not a Logan Act violation?”

The Logan Act of 1799 has been invoked exactly twice.

Both times before the Civil War, in 1803 and 1853, and both times the cases were dropped.

The Logan Act is a bit similar to the Alien & Sedition Acts passed around the same time, which Jefferson and Madison argued violated free speech.

Newsome just sealed his fate. He’s untrustworthy and has no ethics. Davos is not where middle school girls smack talk out of turn and without invitation to do so. There are rules.

Trump's made a brilliant choice here... it'll be amazing...
