It looks like a case of wiener take all.
Nathan’s Famous, an iconic American hot dog maker and fast-food chain, was sold to Smithfield Inc., a Chinese-owned pork producer, in a $450 million all-cash deal.
The two companies announced the merger in a statement Tuesday. Smithfield Foods will acquire all of Nathan’s Famous shares for $102 each, according to the announcement.
"The Nathan’s Famous acquisition is a meaningful step in the progression of Smithfield Foods allowing us to own all of the top brands in our packaged meats portfolio," Shane Smith, Smithfield CEO and president, said in the statement.
Smithfield Foods expects to "achieve annual cost synergies of approximately $9 million by the second anniversary of the deal closing," according to the announcement.

Nathan’s has been Shanghaied.
We still have Koegel’s in Michigan.
I don’t like China buying up U.S. food producers, any more that I like them buying American farm land. This should be banned by legislation, IMO.
And Chicago still has Vienna Beef Co.
Heard about this 6 months ago. Never liked their hot dogs anyway. The Chinese own most of the pork producers in the US. I buy local or Hatfield ,they haven’t sold us out yet.

Krusty will probably sell-out, as well.
Dearborn Sausage as well, to the best of my knowledge they’re still American owned.
This is not good news. But if China invades Taiwan, Trump would immediately nationalize all these Chinese-owned American companies.
(Just desperately looking for a bright side here.)
This is horrible
Gotta stock up
Never to buy again
Vienna, Hoffman’s, Pearl, Rice’s and a few other regional brands will fill the void in my fridge.
Is this post kosher?
I can’t blame them for that much money.
Of course, that means the brand will start to suck and no one will care any more.
Instead of the family closing up such because no one wants to run the business any more, it will slowly decline and become irrelevant as soon as something better comes along.
Over a century, they had a good run.
Now, if only they’ll start with the damned “hot dog eating” contest that it no such thing. It’s a “shove this stuff down your gullet” contest. Gross and uninteresting.
Your pharmacist might not be able give you your pills without Chinese inputs.
I was just on the Smithfield website. They hide very well that they are China-owned, and call themselves “an American company” on the website. It isn’t until you look at their Board of Directors that you see that Long Wan is the Chairman of the board and that Smithfield is owned by the China-based WH Group. We should not allow any American companies to be bought by a foreign government - particularly companies that have control over our food supply.
George there are probably farms near you in New England that you could buy pork from.
I know of two here in southern NH.
Then there is Walden who will deliver local farm raised beef, chicken, pork(bacon) and wild caught fish to your house. Is it expensive, YES. It also is not filled with GMOs that is in all the meat sold at major grocery chains. My wife started buying this. It is all grass fed beef.
Last night we had beef burgers from Walden.
We only had two.
Lastly, I shot a deer in November.
I have over 60 pounds of venison in my freezer.
So, we have discontinued the Walden orders for six months.
In the last couple months we have eaten Venison steaks, stew, chili, etc. It is the best CLEANEST meat you can get.
It is not gamey at all, because it was in the freezer at the processing plant hanging on a hook within 6 hours of being alive chasing the doe when I shot it(thinking with the little head cost him his life).
This ruins my day. Do these things come in threes ?
