Former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper holds a commanding double-digit lead in the latest poll of North Carolina's closely watched Senate race, which is seen as one of Democrats' best pickup opportunities in the 2026 midterm elections.
The new survey data released Monday by Tipp Insights for the League of American Workers shows Cooper with 48 percent compared to 24 percent who support former Republican National Committee (RNC) chair Michael Whatley. An additional 27 percent are undecided.

This one is gone. NC is too bluish.
We need to pick up GA.
A ridiculous margin that will never hold up, but the race is, and has always been, Cooper’s to lose.
It’s easily the #1 likliest Senate seat to flip.
Too bad the GOP couldn’t find a viable candidate, but they never had a chance to do so after Lara Trump declined.
If you don’t campaign, you won’t win. Whatley has been invisible and has never won a statewide election in NC. Cooper is well known and was elected governor twice. Tillis, the GOP Senator who is quitting the seat, has been a huge disappointment. Unless Whatley does something quick, NC will have a Democrat Senator.
Roy Cooper is a two term Governor. He’s FAR better known than Whatley. This explains the high percentage of undecideds.
North Carolina has been trending Republican lately. Just last month Republicans surpassed Democrats in voter registration for the first time in history. Nevertheless this is still going to be tough race. Whatley needs to become better known AND needs to (rightly) portray Roy Cooper as a paint by the numbers extremist.
Since he singlehandedly struck down North Carolina’s marriage amendment and worked to strike down a ban on men in women’s bathrooms, he’s part of the Left’s revolution that could add more seats representing that state on the Supreme Court in 2029.
Men in women’s spaces is his calling card.
Whatley needs to get Trump to help to get his name out. And yeah, some ads showing that Roy Cooper is weak on crime—just point out what happened to that Ukrainian woman riding the (CATS) train in Charlotte. Bush 41 had the perfect ad on Willie Horton.
This was before what happened yesterday. Now, The vanglicalscare going to come out in fource to vote.
Nonsense, Republicans lead Democrats in Registration.
Yet with a Dem governor.
Because the GOP Candidate was a lunatic.
True. I unfortunately lived around Raleigh in 1987 to 1990. All Dems then.
NC GOP sucks. Cooper will win. Think Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill. Jersey light.
[Since he singlehandedly struck down North Carolina’s marriage amendment and worked to strike down a ban on men in women’s bathrooms,]
How can voters be so stupid and Godless?
Wait, don’t answer that...
Roy Cooper, when he was AG, refused to indict Crystal Mangum who accused the Duke lacrosse team of raping her. When they analyzed the DNA rape kit contents she had DNA from ten recent men, not one of whom was a member of the lacrosse team or a student at Duke.
“Too bad the GOP couldn’t find a viable candidate, but they never had a chance to do so after Lara Trump declined.”
Michael Whatley is the candidate because he is Donald Trump’s choice. There were other GOP candidates who dropped out when Trump anointed Whatley. It was a poor choice because Whatley is virtually unknown in the state. He has never won a race for public office. If this seat is lost it is because Trump chose poorly and Whatley didn’t campaign hard for the seat. So far things look bad because he has not been traveling the state, meeting voters and defining himself. Any candidate who is unknown and doesn’t campaign, is destined to lose when running against a well known and successful politician.
As for NC being lost I suggest you look at our Republican Senator Tedd Budd who was elected in 2022, when Trump was out of office. Budd was a life long NC resident and small businessman. He successfully ran for a seat in Congress and won reelection twice before deciding on a Senate run. He had a record to run on when he decided to run for the Senate and was a proven winner in NC elections.
Budd won the 2022 Republican Senate primary against a former GOP Governor of NC and another GOP member of the House of Representatives. In the general election he defeated the Democrat candidate, former chief justice of the NC Supreme Court Cheri Beasley by a 3.2% margin. He demonstrated that a conservative candidate who campaigns strongly can win a statewide race in North Carolina even if his last name isn’t Trump.
It has been known in North Carolina for years that Roy Cooper would be the likely Democrat candidate. President Trump and the RNC have had at least 4 years to find a candidate, develop that candidate, and put in place a plan to beat Roy Cooper. Whatley’s only qualification is having served as head of the RNC and having the endorsement of Donald Trump. If Roy Cooper is elected to the Senate this year, don’t blame the voters of NC. Blame Donald Trump and Michael Whatley for running an unknown lousy campaigner instead of finding and supporting a NC conservative such as Ted Budd. There are actually some NC GOP congressional representatives who have more name recognition and who would be out aggressively campaigning today if given Trump’s endorsement.
As for Lara Trump, she is not a resident of the state. We had a carpetbagger Republican US Senator, Elizabeth Dole, who served one term and was defeated in her run for reelection. Memories of her miserable performance are still fresh in NC voters minds. If Lara Trump wants to be a Senator, she can run from the state where she lives with her husband and children. The people of NC don’t want or need another Senator with no regard for the people of the state. I suspect if Lara seriously considered running against Cooper, any polling she did to test the water found that Republican voters don’t want a Senator who isn’t invested in the state.
I remember. I live on the NC Coast. Roy Cooper is a piece of shit.
>>”If you don’t campaign, you won’t win. Whatley has been invisible and has never won a statewide election in NC.”
Better to wait until spring or early summer to start campaigning in earnest. Spending a lot of money campaigning now is not an efficient use of resources. Of course he can campaign in inexpensive ways in the mean time by attending local events, etc. But it’s too early to start making significant ad buys when peoples’ attentions are focused on other things.
Whatley is a ghost. I haven’t heard his name since Trump dragged him across the finish line last time. Same can be said for Tim Scott in SC
