A 34-year-old lawyer was sentenced on Friday, Jan. 9 to one year in jail and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service for a DUI crash that killed a United States Postal Service driver in Garden Grove.
Lotfullah Sohaib Latif faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, according to a news release issued after his conviction in October by the Orange County District Attorney’s office.
Latif was driving nearly 90 mph on the 22 Freeway, near the 405 freeway and Valley View Street, seconds before “veering off the highway and colliding with the guard rail,” around 3:55 a.m. on June 9, 2019, prosecutors said in a trial brief.
He “veered back onto the road” as the vehicle was disabled in the eastbound lanes. Carlos Alberto Lara, 58, crashed a semi-trailer tractor truck into the disabled vehicle and slammed into a pole, causing the truck to “burst into flames,” prosecutors said. Lara died at the scene.
When CHP officers contacted Latif on the right shoulder of the 22 freeway, he denied drinking or having been involved in a collision, according to the DA’s news release.

Such a crime deserves the death penalty.
The perp will be back on the streets in one year to kill again.
“… Lotfullah Sohaib Latif …”

Used to get 1 to 10 simply for stealing a car in California
I look at it as life becoming very cheap in the U.S.A. like it is in so much of the world. The clowns in government have systematically destroyed the things that made America special, this is just another symptom.
Hopefully he’s deportable.
It’s a …collective… problem…
I wonder what the penalty would have been if he had killed a judge instead of a postal worker.
So far he has a slap on the wrist
Sounds like a good career move for him. Plenty of time to network with future clients over the next year. Should be able to get lots of referrals from his compatriots in the cell block and dining hall.
Little doubt a white guy named John would've received the maximum sentence.
Former lawyer. I think the felony conviction got him disbarred.
Yeah, no wonder he’s smiling…
As opposed to ‘problem’ I term it a condition.
An irreversible condition.
One ‘problem’ is that it’s not itself terminal.
I just ran across this. For anyone interested who can tell us what’s in there...
He deliberately got drunk and then got hold of a deadly weapon. That was intentional. Hang him.
Would like to know how much more.
