Texas A&M is banning Plato, citing his “gender ideology.”

Today, Texas A&M resumes classes for the spring semester—but a number of canonized texts will not be welcomed back to school. The public research university has lately been caught in the crossfire between state and stupid.

As The Texas Tribune has reported, faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences were informed just last week that “a new system policy restricting classroom discussions of race and gender” is set to take effect today.

The policy, engineered and approved by the Texas A&M University Regents last November, requires that the school’s president sign off on every syllabus with an eye to scrubbing “problematic” content. But the foes were loosely framed.

Under the new restrictions, gender ideology is defined as “a concept of self-assessed gender identity replacing, and disconnected from, the biological category of sex.” Race ideology entails “attempts to shame a particular race or ethnicity” or anything that “promotes activism on issues related to race or ethnicity rather than academic instruction.”

As a European history professor pointed out at the time, this wording could effectively prohibit a professor from teaching about the Holocaust.

My gut instinct on this is,

Although I don't have enough info about Tx A&M to say definitively.....

My gut instinct is that this is a masterful move on the part of the university's progressive activists.

Its not a secret that modern gender ideology for the last 10-50 or so years is the target. But progressives know that there is a sort of a cult that has been built up around the aura of "Western culture" and so it makes sense that banning a Plato book, which is far, far outside of the actual goals of the whole concept of a target on gender ideology, is going to rub the "Western culture Cult" the incorrect way. This has the potential to really pick a fight - a fight that the progressives sincerely want to have BTW.

It's diabolically brilliant. This would even make Saul Alinsky blush.

Control words, control speech, control thought

Orwell had it wrong. Its not merely the Party saying you must believe 2+2=5, and applying brute force

It’s designating women, foreigners, so-called minorities, fake experts, etc..(whatever you respond to) to tell you 2+2=5.

People resist force, but use the weapons of morality, misplaced sympathy, fake-science, a demand for fairness, false tolerance and “inclusion,” and you don’t need force.

A&M, like most universities, has the reputable and intelligent side of the academic staff. And they also have the lib arts side.

One guess to which side the real students (real Aggies) is on.

Don’t Aggies have the obligation to learn about “Animal HUSBANDRY” in Agriculture?

Just try mating a BULL to another BULL.

It could get dicey.

A simple syllabus search at Texas A&M proves this article to be a lie. The university did not BAN Plato, they prevented a libtard marxist from using a single passage of Plato to insert gender dysphoria and DEI politics into his class in violation of university policy.

The legislature needs to start defunding universities who do this stuff. The “education” people receive at places with that kind of thinking is less than worthless - why waste millions/billions of dollars to promote it? Start funding trade and technical schools instead. A well-rounded education is preferable to have an educated populace, but those days are long since in the rear view mirror - instead it is propaganda and indoctrination.

Diabolically brilliant?

Diabolically idiotic.

Updated course description: Philosophy challenges students to understand, articulate, and evaluate arguments from multiple points of view. Students evaluate the claims, presuppositions, and reasoning of various positions, including one’s own, on contemporary social problems, and analyze those problems using ethical and social theories. Students examine how ideas, values, and other aspects of
culture (including power and authority) shape and are shaped by human experience and institutions. Students practice respectful and thoughtful engagement on contentious matters, such as abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, the relationship between ethics and religion, violence and war, animal ethics, sexual morality, gender issues, health care ethics, equality and discrimination, biotechnology and
bioengineering, economic injustice, climate ethics and global hunger and poverty, among others.

My philosophy degree is 50 years old, but the idea that philosophy is purely academic without any connection to real world issues is just plain ignorant. Discussion of current-day topics doesn’t devalue the study. Plato wasn’t a monastic shut-in who avoided controversy, and it was the forced suicide of his teacher, Socrates, that drew him to take on the subjects of power, justice, and equity, culminating in his Republic.

There are modern, abstruse fields like Wittgenstein’s Philosophy of Mathematics and Quine’s Ontology, but classical Greek philosophy is intimately linked to what to them were current events.

"Texas A&M is banning Plato, citing his “gender ideology.”"

Why stop at Plato. Just go to the source and ban Socrates outright just to be sure. What could possibly go wrong?

Back in Greek Society, the guys were homos and at marriage to a girl, the girl would have her head shaved so she would look more like a boy. Since the Greek boys were used to having sex with other boys, the bald girl would look more like a boy and her new husband would feel more comfortable in bed with a female. Plato’s Republican seemed to me to be exactly like Idealistic communism. Everyone taking care of each other’s needs.

Fake news. Tex A&M is not “banning Plato.” Some department simply told ONE INSTRUCTOR that his syllabus didn’t align the expectations of the course. This isn’t really all that different than if I were assigned to teach Accounting 101, and I wanted to assign my students to read “Winnie the Pooh.” Winnie has his place, but not in that course. But that’s not the point, is it? The point is the headline, the narrative that the know-nothing ignoramuses in TX are banning Plato.

“Start funding trade and technical schools instead.”

The problem, as it currently stands, is that administration is sold and fully committed to online learning systems based out of Denmark. Although the local technical college was whole-heartedly committed to genuine hands-on learning in the past, this is no longer the case and as a result student proficiency has suffered tremendously. This, among other things, such as incompetence running rampant through most all the technical programs offered at this college have resulted in a significant hit to it’s prior reputation as a top-notch technical college.

Like it or not the ancient Greek philosophers are important to Western Civ and should be studied. This ban is nothing short of cultural destruction. Fire the proponents.
