Russia’s Threats Against Finland Are Disturbingly Familiar
Foreign Policy ^ | 01/09/2026 | Edward Lucas

First, the country was a Nazi ally; then it became a NATO stooge. The latest allegation: It’s a reckless Russia-basher that deserves a ruthless response from the Kremlin. Who said Finland was boring?

Amid all the focus on Russia’s war against Ukraine, it is easy to overlook another prime target of Moscow’s imperialist ire. Russia has long used a skewed interpretation of history as a weapon to attack and delegitimize its neighbors—and, if the Kremlin’s latest rhetorical escalation is any guide, it now has Finland in its gunsights. The Finns are understandably nervous, given recent precedent: In 2021, Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s lengthy historical essay denying Ukraine’s claims to statehood and decrying its independence from Russia provided a pretext for his full-scale invasion of Ukraine a few months later.

The details might seem arcane: Who really cares these days about Finland’s tangled history during World War II, let alone the legal status of the Grand Duchy of Finland within the old tsarist empire? But history is not an academic discipline in Russia. It is an instrument of power, used to strengthen the Kremlin’s grip on society, legitimize aggression, and undermine other countries’ sovereignty.

Moscow wields history with fiery emotion. Take, for example, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who posted on X on Jan. 2 that the Bolsheviks’ recognition of Finnish independence from Russia in 1917 was a “blunder” (that presumably should now be reversed) and that the country must pay for its “vile Russophobia.”

Painted by Western commentators as a liberal-minded modernizer during his 2008-12 stint as head of state, Medvedev has assumed the mantle of Russia’s chief Finland-basher. This time, the specific target of his bile was “some guy called Stubb.” That was a derogatory reference to Finnish President Alexander Stubb, one of the savviest figures...

By joining NATO in 2023, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev wrote, the “pro-American puppet authorities” in Helsinki lost their right to any “political pardon” from Moscow; Finland now “directly and rudely tramples” on the historical and legal basis for its existence as an independent state. Russia, he argued, is therefore entitled to renounce the treaties under which it recognized Finland’s independence, sovereignty, and borders; litigate charges of genocide and warmongering; and claim reparations from Helsinki for World War II-era damage. All this, he wrote, “could lead to the collapse of Finnish statehood once and for all.”

The Finns will give the Russians the “Marshal Mannerheim” treatment if they try anything. I think the Russkies have enough on their plates now.

It’s just hot air. They’re not going to do anything to Finland. Finland and Sweden joined NATO because Russia is weak. They would never have dared while the Soviet Union was still around.

what a load of crap.

Finland sold its soul to join NATO and agree to be the home to missiles aimed at Russia, this after decades of peacefully co-existing with it and even with the Soviet Union.

Then, Russia responds and propagandists like the author blame Russia for doing so.

It's idiots like this and those that believe him that are pushing us toward WW III and nuclear war.

On January 10, 2022 Russia, in a diplomatic meeting with the United States in Geneva, said that they weren't planning on invading Ukraine.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov emerged from the nearly eight hours of talks and declared, "There are no plans or intentions to attack Ukraine." He went on to say, "There is no reason to fear some kind of escalatory scenario."

Russia invaded Ukraine the very next month.

"In high-stakes meeting, Russia tells U.S. it isn't planning to invade Ukraine"

“…The attacks on Finland are part of a much bigger strategy to weaponize Russia’s patriotic historiography, which depicts the Soviet Union as both blameless and heroic. It makes no mention of Joseph Stalin’s quasi-alliance with Hitler, the atrocities perpetrated by Soviet forces across Eastern and Central Europe, or the fact that Stalin launched a disastrous, unprovoked invasion of Finland in the Winter War of 1939-40.

Finland beat back that attack, but it received only modest support from allies and neighbors. It had to give up substantial territory to strike the peace deal with the Soviets that ended the Winter War in 1940. When Hitler attacked the Soviet Union in 1941, Finland launched its own offensive in attempt to regain its lost territories. It was a co-belligerent but not a formal ally of the Axis powers. It broke with Berlin in 1944 and concluded a separate peace with the Soviet Union, including heavy reparations, territorial concessions, and forced neutrality.…”

You’re an idiot. Finland has been a quiet ally of USA and the ww2 allies since 1940 and the winter war.

Russia responds with a semi-veiled threat of military invasion and its Finlands fault? Victim blame much?

Does Russia have it’s own Monroe Doctrine? Timing would be favorable for using it.

Russian mir is a fascinating condition.
It decides what parts of history to trumpet, and ignores the rest.
Let’s talk invasions, Russians love to talk about how many times they have been invaded, while ignoring how many times they have been the invader

Let’s look at recent history
Sept 1939 invaded Poland allied with Nazi germany
November 1939 invaded Finland
June 1940 invaded Baltics, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia
June 1940 invaded Romania
Oct 1956 invaded Hungary
1929 and 1979 invaded Afghanistan
1994 and 1999 invaded Chechnya
1921 and 2008 invaded Georgia
2014 invaded Ukraine
2022 invaded Ukraine

Poor poor Russia, always the “victim “

Yes they do, but as the Russian milbloggers lamented Russia can’t do what US did, nor can they achieve the putin doctrine
Almost 4 years into putins war and they hold less land than in March of 2022
Economy is in tatters
Soviet legacy equipment stocks squandered
Revenue tanking
High interest rates and inflation
Food exporter to food importer
Fuel exporter to fuel importer
Industry retracting
GDP retracting
Shadow fleet in disarray
Allies falling, Syria, Iran, Venezuela
Afrika corps(interesting choice of name) failing
Military is reduced to squad or less size attacks
Days away from how long it took to win “the great patriotic war” and “victory” is nowhere in sight

So—let me get this straight.

Stalin was evil for his alliance with Hitler.

Finland was good for their alliance with Hitler.

Lol.

Russia has proved that it is incapable of achieving its stated goal, that doesn’t mean that putin is unable to cause great destruction ie nukes

Russian mir- Russia is always the victim, while attacking its neighbors and threatening other if they don’t accept Russias/ putins demands

LOL, lets ignore the fact that Stalin invaded Finland, November 30, 1939, BEFORE Finland made ANY agreements with Hitler

VS

On August 30, 1939, Soviet Union and Nazi Germany signed the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, which included a secret clause demarcating Finland as part of the Soviet sphere of influence.

Like Putin invading Ukraine, Stalin lost to Finland

The Baltic sea access can be easily cut off to the Russian fleet. Russia is dependent on Finnish ports for many container bringing cargo to Russia and St Peteersburg.
