Police believe an attack at a Tempe community center that left several senior citizens hurt was racially motivated, based on statements the alleged suspect made to detectives following his arrest.
Derek Carl Kirven, 62, is jailed on multiple charges in connection with the incident that happened on Wednesday morning at the Escalante Multi-Generational Center.
According to court documents, Kirven walked into the main lobby around 9:15 a.m. and went to a hallway where he sat down. A City of Tempe security guard told Kirven he was in a restricted area and needed to return to the lobby.
When he returned to the lobby, staff members told Kirven that food and drinks were for members only and tried to sign him up. He reportedly refused and tried to enter a recreation area, but staff told him it was members-only, and he left the building.
Around 11:30 a.m., two hours after he left, documents say Kirven walked back into the lobby and into the restricted recreational area where about 20 people were eating. When staff once again told him to leave, Kirven, unprovoked, reportedly began to punch people nearest to him.
Per documents, Kirven then began moving around the room punching others, many of whom were elderly and seated with no time to react or defend themselves. The attack was caught on security cameras.
Security guards eventually detained Kirven before Tempe police officers arrived. Several people were injured.
One person, who was seated when attacked, was punched multiple times and was hospitalized with a broken wrist. Another had a broken nose, which doctors classified as severe.
A third victim had facial injuries and suffered a head injury when falling to the ground. Another person was concerned that the new injuries aggravated a previous open-heart surgery.

Gosh, whatever gave them that idea?
> Gosh, whatever gave them that idea? <
I have told this story before.
A while back I was out for a walk. And I happened to walk by a bus stop where two older black men were sitting and talking. As I passed, I heard one man say to the other that most white people belong to the Ku Klux Klan.
——
Propaganda is a powerful thing, whether it’s told on the national news or around a dinner table.
“ I heard one man say to the other that most white people belong to the Ku Klux Klan.”
The democrats have not had an active klan group since the 1970’s.
Not all democrats belonged to the klan, but all klansmen were democrats.
Projection
.
Is that actually true?
Wasn't there support for the Klan by Indiana Republicans in the 1920s?
Yes.
The last violent KKK shootout that comes to mind was the 1979 Greensboro (NC) Massacre in NOV 1979. I remember it because I was living in Raleigh at the time. White communist PhDs started it with handguns and the KKK finished it with rifles and shotguns.

Nothing to see here just another feral animal attack....
Low IQ, poor decision making skills, self survivable rating good, he only seems to attack old gray haired old women.
Yogi?
Yes, Boo-Boo.
Unexpected!
Irony.
re Wasn't there support for the Klan by Indiana Republicans in the 1920s?
Between that & AI - a bit redundant, IMHO - there you have it:
Indiana’s Republican Party was deeply entangled with the Ku Klux Klan during the 1920s, when the Indiana Klan became one of the most politically powerful Klan organizations in the nation. The Klan’s influence peaked around the 1924 election, when candidates it backed—almost all Republicans—won major statewide and local offices. The movement collapsed only after the 1925 scandal and conviction of Indiana Grand Dragon D.C. StephensonThat's c/o the MS AI in copilot. Grok is almost word for word copy/paste (or vice versa).
AI suggests that you are correct - ahem - but the facts dictate otherwise.
Indiana Grand Dragon D.C. Stephenson changed his party affiliation due to election loss. He was NOT a republican.
Some facts on the klan in IN here
More facts on IN Republicans rejecting Stephenson & klan influence they sought to exercise over the party
The Klan wanted influence. One Elkhart leader took a stand.
AI = "GIGO" = "propaganda"
The fact that one Republican - or many - took a stand against the Klan does not mean there were not some Republicans that did support the organization.
My post was in response to post 4 that claimed “all klansmen were democrats.”
Since the Klan was a secret organization I don't know how anyone could determine the political affiliation of every secret member.
But yeah, it sounds good: “No Republican ever said a bad word.”
“No Republican ever said a bad word.”
I didn’t write that.
Troll behavior, that is.
