The Trump administration’s border czar said on Jan. 7 that he has not seen any examples of excessive force in videos showing a woman being shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a traffic stop in Minneapolis.
During a Wednesday interview with “CBS Evening News” anchor Tony Dokoupil, border czar Tom Homan watched a video clip of the incident involving the shooting, but said he won’t comment on an investigation into the incident.
“I’m not going to make a judgment call on one video when there’s a hundred videos out there,” he said.
“It'd be unprofessional to comment on what I think happened in that situation. Let the investigation play out and hold people accountable based on the investigation.”
“I have not seen ICE act out outside of policy. If they are acting outside of policy, I’m not aware of it.
There‘ll be an investigation. They’ll be held accountable,” Homan also said in the interview.
Homan added that people who are making “comments about murder [are] going to incite ... more violence, more threats, and hopefully not more bloodshed” against ICE agents.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that the woman was trying to run over an agent in Minneapolis, prompting the official to open fire on the driver.
Dozens of protesters gathered early on Jan. 8 outside of a federal building on the edge of the city that is serving as a major base of operations for the crackdown on illegal immigration. They said that ICE agents and other officials should leave the city, while Border Patrol officers pushed them back from the gate and fired smoke grenades.
DHS has deployed more than 2,000 officers to the area in what it says is its largest immigration enforcement operation ever, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said more than 1,500 people have already been arrested.
Noem called the events leading up to the shooting incident on Wednesday an “act of domestic terrorism” against ICE officers, saying the driver “attempted to run them over and rammed them with her vehicle.”
“An officer of ours acted quickly and defensively, shot, to protect himself and the people around him.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, disputed Noem’s version of events.
“They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense,” Frey said. He also criticized the Trump administration’s ICE deployment and said those agents should leave Minneapolis. A large operation involving multiple agencies was launched in the city, partly tied to allegations of widespread fraud targeting federal services and programs.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz told reporters he would send in the National Guard if the protests get out of hand, urging people to keep the demonstrations peaceful. He also criticized the ICE agent over the shooting.
After the Trump administration launched its mass deportation operation, officials have said there has been a significant increase in attacks targeting ICE agents.

I like him.

I wonder what nationality most of those arrested are... Are they mostly Somalis, or those who crossed the border from Mexico ( mostly South Americans )?
Maybe Canucks.
Maybe Canucks.
I know Tom Homan is already high-up on the chain of command, but in terms of media presence, I’d prefer him over Noem.
Some democrats are saying that officers are trained to not shoot at moving vehicles. Tell that to “any cop” anywhere...
That’s a good, measured, careful response from Homan. Well done, Tom.
Noem is MUCH easier on male eyes.
Hubby (PhD) did some math and figured that the kinetic force of the car was many times stronger than the gun’s bullet (s). The agent definitely was acting in self defense.
Those who say the car just barely bumped the guy are ignoring the fact that her tire spun out on the ice. That is the only reason that officer is still alive AND the officer with his arm in the car who would have also been dragged if the car had taken off when revved up instead of stalling on the ice. And the very ice that kept her from killing him by brute force could have ended up killing either or both of those guys by making them fall under the car to be run over.
The officer heard the car rev up, pointed directly at him. He had no way to know the ice would stop the immediate burst, or that the gal would turn the steering wheel after realizing the wheel was stuck on ice. The guy was in front of the car because the gal had backed up into a position that put him in front of the car.
“Some democrats are saying that officers are trained to not shoot at moving vehicles. Tell that to “any cop” anywhere...“
DHS procedures only allow it under certain circumstances. And the Supreme Court ruled 9-0 last year that law enforcement officers must consider the totality of the situation before using deadly force.
“The officer heard the car rev up, pointed directly at him. He had no way to know the ice would stop the immediate burst, or that the gal would turn the steering wheel after realizing the wheel was stuck on ice. The guy was in front of the car because the gal had backed up into a position that put him in front of the car“
Videos show that the agent placed himself in front of the vehicle before she backed up. We need to see the officers’ body cams which would show who the woman was looking at when she attempted to drive off. Was she looking at the agent at tgr front of the car or was she looking at the agent reaching in at her through the open side window.
You description has great insight into the dynamics of the situation. Well written too.
Somebody on another thread gave the link to a Tim Pool podcast from today which covers most of that. I can’t find the link again but it’s listed as the top item at https://podcast.app/timcast-news-p451721 . If you have the app to download it you can see it. I wish I could find the link that I was able to watch it on because the slowed-down video is crucial to understanding what happened.
Gunning a car while somebody has their arm inside is at very best vehicular negligence. You gun a car with somebody reaching in, you’re trying to kill them.
Yes and they are doing that knowingly and intentionally.
And in the totality of the situation this woman had been following them and blocking them and screaming obscenities at them all day long. And when she accelerated towards one officer if he had not stopped her she could have stopped and put her car in reverse again and accelerated backwards to try and hit more officers.
Given her prior actions that would have been a reasonable concern.
That describes the “totality of the situation.”
I found that slow motion enlarged video of the shooting. The ICE officer was in front of the left front part of Good’s vehicle. The other officer was pulling on the truck’s door handle and appeared to be yelling at the driver. In a split second, the officer pulls out his gun; like the gunfight at the OK Corral, and starts shooting. He saved his life.
I'd have opted for choice #2, as would have anyone interested in self-preservation.
Of course, there are armchair warriors who, never having ever faced potentially deadly situations, are criticizing the guy's correct, instinctive call of attempting to stop a jacked-up, leftist lunatic driving a big vehicle aimed directly at him.
