Conan O’Brien warned comedians giving in to their anger at President Donald Trump that they are being “co-opted” and not making much of a difference.
In a conversation with Oxford Union on Tuesday, O’Brien noted he often hears people say how “great” Trump must be for comedians. The one-time Tonight Show host argued the opposite, saying “talking crazy” is part of Trump’s brand and it makes it difficult to structure satire around it. O’Brien cited Trump’s construction of a White House ballroom as something sketch comedy writers would likely come up with to mock Trump — except it’s reality.
“Comedy needs a straight line to go off of, and we don’t have a straight line right now. We have a very bendy, rubbery line,” he said.

Shouldn’t a comedian be funny?
“talking crazy” is part of Trump’s brand and it makes it difficult to structure satire around it.
The shiney things are there for the media and liberals.
I’m going to try and “read between the lines” here.
First of all, a lot of comedians have, for decades, based their humor around a “joke” which goes like this: “Republicans are stupid.”
SNL has been living off that for decades. It was popular when George W Bush was president — “He’s an idiot.” That was a full comedy routine, right there.
So, this is nothing new. But (reading between the lines) I think Conan is actually warning people: “This has stopped working. The public likes Trump. A lot. No one laughs if you attack Trump. You need to break that old habit and find actual funny stuff to say because the old joke which has been your bread-and-butter has now expired.”

Started with Chevy Chase mocking Gerald Ford.
Sorry, Conan. We’re having a private conversation here.
I guess he did a series of events in the UK recently. He did a great recent video with the guys from “The Rest is History” about The Beatles & Abbey Road, and Conan had met Paul & Ringo several times over the years.
“Other than that, Conan - how was the party?”
Most modern comedians doing political jokes are pandering to the Trump haters. Their “jokes” are nothing but mockery... Obama was well known for this. His so-called jokes always come at the expense of others...never himself.
LOL. Don’t ask about that.
Oh he’s going to act like he’s above it all now?
Conan Has Haitians Roast Trump: ‘Every Time You Leave Your Country, You Make America Great Again’ (Video)
TDS Much Conan?
How many vacations has Conan taken to Port Au Prince since his last photo op when Trump called Haiti a S-hole?
And there are a thousand things to joke about regarding Trump. But you never see anyone lampoon Pelosi, Schumer etc. Swalwell, Jasmine Crockett, etc. The jokes are easy there... but all passed over.
Chapelle is the only one who will. He will go after Trump one minute, and the next he’s going after the woke idiots.
Conan has a podcast. He interviews people. He doesn’t depend on sponsors as much as others, he has an audience.
His podcast is unpretentious. It is not 3 hours long.
He attracts younger viewers because he is topical and because he is funny
He is also educated. He can talk to many different types of people and draw out interesting topics
Here he refers to Homer’s Odyssey, in talking about Sirens which anyone can relate to- the horror of being lured in and ruining one’s life, or at least one’s career and reputation
Younger people actually relate to this. They like interviews like we I’d when we were young adults
This is the direction- TV is going away.
Seems to me you had a pretty straight line with Obama… but there was nothing funny about him… right Conan?
Jimmy Kimmel is a prime example of an alleged “comedian” who rails against Trump, sometimes tearfully, with minimal attempt to be funny. He’s Exhibit A for what O’Brien is describing, i.e., a purported comic who has thinks that the situation is “so serious that he doesn’t need to be funny.”
All they have are three templates to caricature any reasonably successful right-of-center politician or celebrity:
1. Stupid redneck Bible-thumping ignoramus.
2. Evil, heartless Gordon Gekko/Lex Luthor.
3. Whatever -ist, -phobe, you want to assign based on some “oppressed” category of race, gender, sexuality, or religious belief that fits the current narrative.
