European governments now understand the seriousness of Trump's threats and are "desperately looking for a plan to stop him"
BRUSSELS, January 8. /TASS/. Amid US President Donald Trump's increasingly harsh rhetoric about establishing control over Greenland, the European Union is preparing for a direct confrontation with the US leader, according to Politico Europe.
"We must be ready for a direct confrontation with Trump," an EU diplomat briefed on ongoing discussions told the newspaper. "He is in an aggressive mode, and we need to be geared up," he added.
The newspaper notes that while European governments previously did not realize the seriousness of Trump's threats, they now understand them and are "desperately searching for a plan to stop him."
Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should join the US. He did not rule out the use of force to resolve the issue in an interview with NBC News in early May 2025.
On January 6, the White House, in a written statement provided to Reuters, commented on plans regarding Greenland, stressing that "of course, utilizing the US military is always an option at the commander-in-chief’s disposal," meaning it is available to Trump.
In turn, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified on January 7 that Trump is actively discussing the possibility of purchasing Greenland with his subordinates.

Trump holds all the cards. The EU holds their Johnson in one hand and a box of Kleenex in the other.
Tell them to shove off.
Give Denmark 10 Billion and exemption from tariffs for 20 years and tell them to GTFO.
IN my best Mr. Burns voice:” Oh, the Europeans are mad, the Europeans.”
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark - in 1953 it became an integral part of Denmark.
In 2009 it passed the Self-Government Act, which recognized Greenlanders as a separate people under international law and granted them the legal right to seek full independence. Greenland manages its own judicial affairs, policing, and natural resources. Denmark remains responsible for foreign affairs, defense, and monetary policy.
Besides Greenland, the other autonomous territories of Denmark includes the Faroe Islands.
Basically separate countries under the Danish crown.
“Denmark” can no more sell Greenland (or the Faroe Islands) than the UK can sell Scotland
The EU wants a two-front way — their Eastern Front can fight Russia (stay away from Stalingrad) and their Western Front can try to prevent a US landing somewhere on the coast. Remember — “If Steiner attacks, it will stabilize the front.”
The EuroTrash are more concerned about losing Greenland than they are about losing all of Europe to the Mohammedens.
How many European citizens would actually take up arms to fight the American GI?
Tass...seriously?
A colony is a colony is a colony.
Legalisms do not change that reality.
Until Greenland votes for independence they are just another colony.
Its not a sale its a bribe. Just what they need to back off. And, Greenland will willingly become a US Territory like Guam or Puerto Rico.
I recall that Trump once said ruling out military option for anything was not a good strategy. My understanding is he will never rule out that option when asked. It doesn’t mean he is considering it but wont rule it out in advance.
The Eurhomos have the mads. Too bad.
This issue is barely above the fold in European newspapers. Most West European governments are making noises about supporting Denmark but not too loudly. Some are also whining about Venezuela, but others like Poland are supporting the US.
EU losing all the grift organizations that have lined their elites pocket for decades.
And, I say: You and whose army EU?
NATO takes on Russia AND the USA, this should be good.
No, not TASS. Politico
Hey Brussels - Proxy war with Russia using Ukraine doesn’t seem so smart now, does it?!
The 2009 Act on Greenland Self-Government explicitly recognizes Greenlanders as a “people” under international law with the right to self-determination.
Denmark and Greenland are equal partners under the Danish crown.
This is analogous to the USA and Palau or the USA and the Marshall islands.
Greenland manages its own education, healthcare, taxation, natural resources (including oil and minerals), and policing. The Kingdom of Denmark remains responsible only for defense, foreign policy, and currency. Even in foreign affairs, Greenland has the authority to negotiate international agreements on matters that have been transferred to its control.
The Danish government can’t tell Greenland what to do — that means that Greenland is NOT a colony.
Just as Palau is fully independent of the USA yet delegated their defense and security responsibilities to the U.S. in exchange for economic assistance and access to U.S. domestic programs, similar to how Denmark handles Greenland’s defense.
Unlike U.S. states or territories like Puerto Rico, these nations can terminate their relationship with the U.S. at any time to pursue full sovereignty, matching Greenland’s legally recognized path to independence
No, it's not TASS. It's Politico as the article makes clear.
