Tillis: Stephen Miller’s Greenland Remarks Were ‘Unacceptable’

Wednesday on CNN’s “The Lead,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) said White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller’s comments that Greenland should be a U.S. territory were “unacceptable.”

Host Jake Tapper said, “So do you want Stephen Miller to lose his job?’

Tillis said, “Either Stephen Miller needs to get into a lane where he knows what he’s talking about or get out of his job. The reason why I thought it was important for me to make a comment on the floor is I’ve been the Republican leader of the Senate NATO observer Group since 2018. There is no more important alliance than the NATO alliance.”

He continued, “To have the Prime Minister suggested they have to be prepared for some sort of action by the United States suggests to me that Mr. Miller does not know anything about the Alliance, the importance of it.”

He added, “We owe them respect, and we need to make it very clear that our strength and our ability to project power, to stand up against Putin, to stand off Russia, I must stand off China, Iran. It all rests on this exquisite capability that we have under NATO.

Tillis concluded, “What Mr. Miller needs to understand, there’s a process that’s sustainable and respectful and what I saw in your interview was unacceptable.”

Two words that I regularly hear that are misused are "unacceptable" and "official". For the former, I ask "and what does being unacceptable portend"? If it is just another way of saying "I don't like it", that is just as meaningless as a New York Giants fan stating that the Eagles winning the Super Bowl is "unacceptable". It only means something if you can respond in a way that undoes or destroys that which is not acceptable. For instance, President Trump has declared Maduro's behavior unacceptable. In THAT case, it really was. The president did NOT accept, and subdued Maduro in response.

The other term is "official", often used when there is no authoritative body, no "office", to appeal to, as in "That does it, MAGA is officially a fascist movement." "Official" is better used when final vote results are tallied and published, or when a bank note is paid off and the mortgage note is removed from the property record, or when the judge enters his sentencing into the record. THAT is official. Not "This is officially the worst steak ever."

It’s telling isn’t it. NATO for Europe but not for USA. What do they think Russian nuclear missiles are going to fly over western Europe across the Atlantic to get to the US? Greenland is an open gap and the path for those Russian missiles that target the midwest and eastern part of the US.

I also think we should pull out any troops and close any bases we have in Spain. They support the Maduro regime and you cant support the Maduro regime and be trusted in NATO.
