Trump urges GOP to be ‘flexible’ on Hyde Amendment, igniting backlash from pro-life allies

Pro-life activists and groups are taking issue with President Donald Trump's remarks to Republican lawmakers to be "flexible" on a law that bans the use of federal funds for most abortions as health care talks continue in Congress.

"Any healthcare plan that prioritizes a ‘deal’ over saving lives — in and out of the womb — deserves to die, not children," Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins said in a statement Tuesday following Trump's address. "Republicans need to fix what the Democrats profoundly broke. Former President Barack Obama destroyed the American healthcare system with Obamacare, driving up costs and pushing life-ending policies with taxpayer funds. The GOP must work not for any deal, but for the right deal."

I'm really conflicted on this. Sadly, the success Obama had on federal healthcare cannot be overstated. As such, most people accept that government should be in healthcare.

This entire Fox article is built around the idea that government should be in healthcare, it's just that abortion fundings should be barred.

We need to reverse Obamunism. Without a healthcare role(which does go back further than Obama) a Hyde Amendment would simply be unnecessary in the first place as there would be 50 states doing what they need to do but otherwise there would be no federal involvement with healthcare of any kind. A wall of separation between healthcare and state would be much more effective and would serve the same purpose as the limited Hyde Amendment's singular target.

Realistically though, even people who will reply to this are in favor of federal healthcare, so if we can't even get our own people right then that's the first problem to overcome.

The government should only provide a framework.

People are completely hooked into medicaid and medicare though. Its impossible for a party to end those programs and not lose elections for generations.

It would entail immense suffering on people as we’ve set up a system where people are in bondage to these programs.

Be flexible and get something passed so they have better chance to keep the House. Or stay hard lined, nothing gets done and lose Congress.

Trump is being very politically astute on healthcare. He knows it will be a huge issue for the midterm elections. He wants a GOP policy that is practical and not ideological. Abortion is a hot button. A national healthcare policy has to take into account the reality that states have huge differences in abortion policies. I think Trump is on the right course here.

President Trump is demonstrably the most pro life President we have ever had. It is not even close when you look at what he has done. I trust him on this subject.

Huh? Trump did not personally overturn Roe. He was fortunate enough to have the ability to appoint three justices who voted to overturn it - joining two justices appointed by other Republican Presidents. Those three justices he appointed were all recommended to him by the Federalist Society - a group from which he has since distanced himself.

The Hyde Amendment has been a red line for Republicans ever since it was passed. If Trump signals that he's willing to compromise on that - to spend our tax dollars to finance abortions - that makes him more pro-abortion than any other recent Republican President.

I’ll wait to see if the idea that Trump is being “flexible” on abortion funding is really a thing.

Right. Trump has sent plenty of mixed messages regarding abortion.

This.

I'm tired of losing elections to literal communists over a futile crusade to prevent mostly low-IQ, unwed, bottom quintile women from aborting future criminals and welfare leeches.

There are times to be flexible. Sacrificing the lives of preborn children on the altar of political expediency is not one of them.

I suspect his liberal daughter and SIL are whispering into President Trump’s ears again. He needs to tell them to STFU.

I see no reason why the federal government should pay for the murder of babies.

It certainly isn’t “proper”.

I should not have to pay for baby murder.

I should not be penalized for failing to pay for baby murder.

I should not be placed in peril of losing my house for failing to pay for baby murder.

Is Trump willing to sacrifice any of his future grandchildren to support this? When he looks at his current grands, which one can he imagine living without? These decisions are not for lawmakers and politicians, They are for God Almighty.

I look at all these negotiations from that viewpoint

I sadly agree with Trump on this one because it's a Hobson’s Choice decision with no good options because if you do not have political power, you cannot influence or control anything.

Abortion is a hot button issue and the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe V Wade probably cost Republicans control of Congress and put the Democrat Party abortion zealots firmly in control of setting the abortion agenda post Roe V Wade.

Plus the rest of their destructive agenda under Joe Biden's Democrat dead lock on American politics

If we take the moral stand against abortion we will lose elections and political control of the government and our good faith moral stand on abortion will enable the Democrats to gin up zealous popular support for abortion to introduce and pass abortion laws that effective provide government paid for infanticide on demand

We have reached a horrible place in America when it comes to abortion because abortion has become institutionalized in American culture and a about a third of American women and men have been directly involved in an abortion to terminate a baby's life and virtually everyone in America has a friend or family member who has had an abortion and may have been involved in the decision making process that resulted in the abortion.

The Supreme Court Court overturning Roe V Wade was a massive disaster for the pro life movement because bad federal abortion polices have been replaced by far worse state laws that pretty much legalize infanticide.

I was stunned at how the State of Arizona legislature feel all over itself to pass shameful abortion legislation only to have it mooted by referendum vote on Arizona Proposition 139, which is probably the most radical abortion law in the country, which passed by a stunning 2 to 1 margin - in conservative Arizona

The Arizona Proposition 139 was oh so artfully drafted with ambiguous wording phrased so no "reasonable minded person " could object while disingenuously allowing for the termination of the life of a live delivered baby at an indefinite time after birth if the child is determined to be a threat to the mother's health and welfare, including “mental health” .

The sad fact is that we live in a seriously degraded and depraved culture that is casually accepts abortion as a de facto human right. That battle is so decisively lost to the abortion zealots that only question at this point is whether the government should actively fund abortion on demand.

The sad practical reality is that to oppose abortion is to lose elections in 2026 America and if we lose at this point we lose everything - including our ability to fight a rear guard operation against abortion as opposed to putting Democrats in charge to legalize unrestricted infanticide on demand - which is where we were and will be with Democrats in charge.

We either make a horrible compromise on abortion to maintain the power to restrict and discourage abortion to the greatest extent possible or we take the (correct) moral stand against abortion only to lose elections and put Democrats and their abortion zealots in complete control.

That is the Hobson’s Choice on abortion that we are presented

God forgive us because we are facing supporting a horrible policy decision to try to prevent and even worse one.

We need to reverse Obamunism“

I am afraid our last chance to do that was killed when that back stabbing traitor McCain switched his vote at the last moment after promising a yes vote throughout the day. He did out of spite. Infamy
