Clinton appointee Judge Alvin Hellerstein has Maduro’s case. Last spring, he barred the Trump admin from removing Venezuelans from the US under the Alien Enemies Act, which he said had been applied unlawfully

Maduro could have been turned over to an opposition group. Or have gotten the Osama treatment. Instead, this Administration will turn him over to the anti-American courts of the SDNY. Expect a circus. Such as discovery demands being granted for transcripts of Trump's recent conversations with Maduro. Seems unnecessary, an own goal.

Even if Maduro is freed, by the time his trial has ground thru the system, he will never be allowed to return to Venezuela.

They get assigned a 92 year old because he is seconds away from retirement and long past the age he would be concerned about having SCOTUS overturn any of his rulings, or be embarrassed in any way for an asinine ruling, so he is perfect, he won’t be worried like a younger judge may be about reputation.

it’s so stupid to put a foreign leader on trial in a US Court. Kill him, depose him, or just lock him up. Acting like he’s entitled to constitutional rights is friggin ridiculous.
To: Stingray51
The case was “randomly assigned” to this judge I assume.

Right but why be concerned about Maduro himself. It is more about putting a hostile court in a position to stick its beak in, a la Jed Boasberg, where it does not belong. It's an opportunity for mischief.

Maduro should go before a military tribunal. Simple as that. His cartel was determined to be a terrorist organization and he along with his cronies should be treated as such.

Yes.
Maybe they figure that the judge will die of old age during the pre-trial motions period before the jury trial begins, and that will trigger a mistrial that will cause the proceedings to begin all over.
Delay, delay, delay...

If he’s not on US soil yet then stash him at GITMO

I couldn’t agree more. At best, for Maduro, send him to Gitmo. We’re taking over the rest of that island anyway.

Pam Blondie never disappoints. She was a blithering idiot to assign the case to New York southern District and a New York jury. Kinda makes me think the plan all along was just to remove him from power to get the oil and set it up so he gets released in our courts. Then Blondie can pound the table about how wrong it is.

Just assume the judge will order him released, so release him now. When he hits the water he can try to swim back to take revenge on his opponents.
