Zohran Mamdani used his first day in office Thursday to hit the ground running with new executive orders targeting city landlords and housing development. And he said the city will take what he called "precedent-setting action" to intervene in a private landlord bankruptcy case he said was tied to 93 buildings.
"It is inauguration day. It is also the day that the rent is due."
Speaking at a Brooklyn apartment building, Mamdani framed the moves as an early test of whether city government will directly confront landlords over housing conditions and step into court cases that could determine whether tenants remain in their homes.
Mamdani said New Yorkers who attended his inauguration were returning to apartments where, he said, "bad landlords do not make repairs," rents rise and residents deal with issues like cockroaches and a lack of heat...
Mamdani announced three housing-related executive orders, starting with the revival of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, which he said will focus on resolving complaints and holding landlords accountable for hazardous conditions.
"We will make sure that 311 violations are resolved," Mamdani said, adding that the administration will hold "slumlords" accountable for "hazardous and dangerous threats" to tenant well-being.
Mamdani said the second executive order creates a LIFT task force, or a land-inventory effort designed to leverage city-owned land and accelerate housing development. He said the task force will review city-owned properties and identify sites suitable for housing development no later than July 1.
The third executive order creates a SPEED task force, which Mamdani said stands for Streamlining Procedures to Expedite Equitable Development. He said the task force will work to remove permitting barriers that slow housing construction.
"These are sweeping measures, but it is just the beginning of a comprehensive effort to champion the cause of tenants."...

I consider Mamdani's good political move to be similar to the Trump generated ICE policy of getting the worst offenders first. The worst of the worst landlords. Looks good to the people.
I am being objective. About a strategy.
Revoke their occupancy permits?

Doesn’t the federal government have exclusive jurisdiction over bankruptcy cases?
they tried this “rent freeze” stunt in th late 60’s, early 70’s. Owners simply closed their buildings and sold the property or just converted them to warehouses.
The outer boroughs were full of abandoned buildings during the ‘70s and ‘80s, presumably as a result of rent control.
Yes, Bankruptcy is fully a Federal Court Function, that doesn’t mean another party can’t get involved, they could hire Attorneys and file objections and other procedural issues in the case, it remains to be seen if the City’s action will have any effect on the case.
What with its severe anti-business climate, buying or investing in real estate in new york city, one is just asking for trouble.
Better than being in denial or dismissive. Anyone running against him one day needs to take note. GOP candidates in every city need to take note and come up with solutions.
Mamdani of course is lucky. Unlike a conservative, the media will have his back. He's already good at PR without them, but they will only help for free.

"Yes, this is a much better arrangement. More just!"
Regards,
Mandummy’s “strategy” will backfire, of course. Private landlords will not put up with the hassle and added red tape of the Mandummy government. They will sell their holdings, even at a loss, to the likes of Blackstone, who will then screw them as only a heartless corporate entity can do. Or, he will have the city buy the unwanted properties and convert them to buildings favorable to his commie muzzie buddies.
My grandfather moved to the bronx around the early 1950s where he raised his family.
In the 1970s, every now and then my father would drive us to grandfathers home for a bisit. To get there, father had to drive through the south bronx where it looked like the apocalypse. Many abandoned or burned out buildings. Or vacant lots with just mountains of rubble that used to be an intact apartment building.

Then what should a conservative leader do when presented with the same frustrated constituents? If Mamdani wins the favor of average voters, his model of governance will be the model for every major US city.
Mandummy’s scheme is not sustainable. Landlords need to make money to have the funding for repairs, advertising, etc.
But aren’t there landlords who do make profit that don’t do the repairs, etc...?
That’s the problem.
Are you a communist sympathizer?

Regards,
Capitalism without Christianity, Christian ethics is problematic.
Communism is trying to be Christianity without God...can become deadly.
