Federal grants for flood mitigation work sat on hold as storms inundated Washington state
NBC News ^ | December 21, 3025 | By Evan Bush (D-NBC)

As Washington state residents take stock of widespread damage, officials say the recent succession of storms highlights why proactive work to protect communities from flooding is so essential. But the Trump administration has delayed or attempted to cut federal funding for some of those projects, leaving a slate of the state’s major initiatives in limbo.

Washington had secured tens of millions of dollars in federal grants for projects to elevate houses, move people away from flood-prone areas and protect homes with new levees, among other measures.

But earlier this year, the Trump administration attempted to cancel roughly $182 million in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for natural hazard mitigation projects in the state, prompting a court battle.

Even more severe floods from these types of events are anticipated in Washington as global warming causes more precipitation to fall as rain instead of snow and makes rainfall more intense.

The federal funding for the state that has been held up under the Trump administration might not have made an immediate difference during this month’s storms, given the work’s long timeframe, but the point is to protect communities from future deluges, Washington officials say.

Wouldn’t the fifty-foot snow drifts ultimately melt and cause flooding?

Maybe it was “on hold” because the “Greenies” were constantly trying to STOP the work to save or protect something?

Elevate your own damn home! Move away from flood-prone areas on your own dime, not mine!!

Maybe if Washington State was seriously concerned about cleaning their vote registration rolls to stop Democrat vote fraud, the money would flow...

A long article with no information about what the federal government’s position is and why except for two words “”calling it “wasteful” and “politicized” in a news release””, yet it is a court case with what must be detailed and sophisticated reasoning.

The average voter will come away with an emotional position from the article though.

Our pitiful media once again demonstrates that the media is for college losers who failed the “Underwater Lesbian Dance” major. No need to argue, just look at each day’s ledes. Just choose the most pathetic and ill-researched, poor logic one...or two...or...you know.

In these cases, I always remember the parable of building house on rock vs sand.
The floodplains are usually well drawn and if you want to build there, it is your own problem. There surely are ways to build safely on floodplain.

It does not take too much to build a levee.
Traditionally, these were build with local money.
It does not seem to me that federal money should be involved.

Typical Leftist reporting from NBC - short on actual factual impact and long on innuendo impact. What I want to know is what Washington state has done with the funds they have received over the years and a look at the fraud in the use of those funds.

The areas that flooded have done so every 20 years or so for hundreds of years.

Right! It’s not the four years of Biden, it’s the eleven months or less of Trump’s evil that’s responsible! As if any flood control projects would have barely been begun this year, certainly not in time for this flooding. And what exactly, other than spending on socialist causes, illegals cough cough, has the socialist state of Washington done to protect its citizens?

I’ll get blasted for this but those Washington residents also pay federal taxes. Trump demanding the withholding funds for disaster mitigation because he does not like that the state’s governing bodies are majority Democrat is wrong and very likely illegal. If the funding whether via grants or outright disbursement was appropriated by Congress then it is not subject to Executive branch review.

There are strict limits to when the Federal government can withhold funding to the states. From what the article reads this is not one of those times.
